The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization.

But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival - a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known....

Opinie krytyków

"Take your earthquakes, waterlogged condominiums, swarms of bugs, colliding airplanes, and flaming what-nots, wrap them up and they wouldn't match one page of Lucifer's Hammer for sweaty-palmed suspense." ( Chicago Daily News)
"Massively entertaining." ( Cleveland Plain-Dealer)

I got this tip from listening to Jerry Pournelle on Twit.tv. All in all it's an engrossing read, if a little dated now (it was written in the 70s or 80s). Some of the science is a bit dodgy, but otherwise the plot is good and the characters well-drawn.

Dated but worthwhile

I read it as book ages ago, and was hooked. I enjoy the listening; and was surprised how much I remembered. Although from the 70ties, there would be no change today, if civilization were to fall to bits.

Great listening

I have listened 25% of the book and so far nothing has happened. It's a story about people living their lives and there is a comet.
So far there is almost no story. People go to the work, they go home, they eat and sleep. And that's it.
And the writer really likes the words "shrugged" and "frowned". Someone shrugges at least ones every five minutes.
I doubt I will finish this book. It is to boring. And if I hear the word "shrugged" again I will rip my ears off.
The reader is ok though. I like him.

I will probably quit the book now
