Beginning a New Series by a New York Times Best-Selling Author. Will the People of Earth Bow Down toAlien Overlords—or Will They Live Free or Die?

First Contact Was Friendly

When aliens trundled a gate to other worlds into the solar system, the world reacted with awe, hope and fear. But the first aliens to come through, the Glatun, were peaceful traders and the world breathed a sigh of relief.

Who Controls the Orbitals, Controls the World

When the Horvath came through, they announced their ownership by dropping rocks on three cities and gutting them. Since then, they've held Terra as their own personal fiefdom. With their control of the orbitals, there's no way to win and earth's governments have accepted the status quo.

Live Free or Die

To free the world from the grip of the Horvath is going to take an unlikely hero. A hero unwilling to back down to alien or human governments, unwilling to live in slavery and with enough hubris, if not stature, to think he can win. Fortunately, there's Tyler Vernon. And he has bigger plans than just getting rid of the Horvath.

Troy Rising is a book in three parts—Live Free or Die being the first part—detailing the freeing of earth from alien conquerors, the first steps into space using off-world technologies and the creation of Troy, a thousand trillion ton battlestation designed to secure the solar system.

Dicke Empfehlung! Wann kommt Teil 3?

Unless I buy a political thriller, I hate having political bits in books, because most authors are quite ham fisted with their portrayal of political opinion that isn't their own. And crappy writing is never fun regardless of one's own opinion about the topic being written about.

Ringo is very very ham fisted with is political writings in this series. Conservatives are the only people behaving reasonable, conservatives are the only humanitarian, liberals would rather watch people die than give up a bit of their personal freedom, conservatives are the only people who would not bitch about taking a vaxination for a deadly disease (lol, that one aged well). Oh and the aliens who are falling out of their golden age are doing so because of socialism and a small military.

Then there's other aspects that are written with the precision of a sledge hammer. Every woman is described by the size of her breasts. Everybodies first thing they think about the MC is "wow he is short" which feels a bit like what a very shallow short person might think everybody else thinks about them. Ringo might be proud about the "oh no John ringo" stuff because he thinks he is triggering the libs or whatever, meanwhile it's just that he once again chooses to write what he sucks at instead of what he is good at.

Because, and this is the important bit, the sci-fi is amazing. Not sure if it's hard sci-fi or not, but at the very least it's not hamd waving to explain magic stuff. Despite all the shortcomings of the story elements, everything to do with the different arrays and space stations and stuff is awesome. It is good enough that like once a year I will listen to the story again. I'm usually surprised by how bad everything else is, but the Troy and stuff like that is worth it IMO.

Amazing SciFi, bad story

Alter Schwede, was habe ich hier ‘gelesen’?

Was zum Henker…?
