“Consciousness might be the greatest mystery of the universe, and Annaka Harris is our best detective… You’ll never think about what happens between your ears in the same way again.” —Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again

“Follow along as Annaka Harris interviews (and graciously challenges) the world’s leading scientists on the nature of consciousness… Magnificent.” —Susan Cain, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Quiet

"These spontaneous conversations and Harris's accessible writing give this audiobook tremendous appeal." —AudioFile

As accessible as it is awe-inspiring, this exclusive audio documentary by New York Times bestselling author Annaka Harris explores the unknown corners of consciousness and the cosmos.

Is consciousness a fundamental building block of the universe, like gravity? Can humans develop new senses through neuroscience? And can artificial intelligence ever truly replicate the subjective experience of being conscious?

Join Annaka Harris as she calls on distinguished experts in science and philosophy to find answers to today’s most perplexing questions about our minds and the universe at large. Through interviews with thinkers such as Brian Greene, David Eagleman, Anil Seth, Carlo Rovelli, and more, Harris presents diverse perspectives on whether consciousness could be considered a fundamental aspect of the universe.

This revolutionary idea challenges traditional neuroscience and quantum physics, shattering what we think we know about ourselves and scientific phenomena as foundational as space and time. Lights On also questions how a new understanding of consciousness might affect our perception of existence, our notions of free will, the development of technology, and the future of scientific discovery. In a follow-up to her seminal book, Conscious, this audio-original documentary offers beginners and experts alike a chance to unravel some of humankind’s most enduring puzzles. Where Conscious presents new questions about felt experience, Lights On seeks to find the answers.

“Only Annaka Harris could take one of the greatest mysteries of science and make it not only an adventure but also deeply relevant to everyday human flourishing.” —Dan Harris, author of the New York Times bestseller 10% Happier and host of the 10% Percent Happier podcast

Opinie krytyków

“If you have even the slightest curiosity about consciousness, Lights On is well worth your time. To hear Harris’s clear and bell-like voice exploring such complexities, in such clear and bell-like terms, is a treat that seems to come from its own inexplicable realm. Follow along as Annaka Harris interviews (and graciously challenges) the world’s leading scientists on the nature of consciousness—and poses a radical new theory that will come to seem entirely plausible. Magnificent.” —Susan Cain, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Bittersweet and Quiet

“In this riveting documentary, Annaka Harris asks some of the most profound questions about consciousness and human existence, making it clear why this dialog is so important for the future of science as well as the future of humanity.” —Scott Barry Kaufman, PhD, professor at Columbia University and author of Transcend: the New Science of Self-Actualization

“Consciousness remains one of the deepest mysteries of our time. Lights On explains why and guides the listener through the cutting-edge of the field. Both accessible and informative, Lights On is one of the most enjoyable and thought-provoking explorations of the science and philosophy of consciousness I have ever come across. Whatever you do, make sure you don’t miss this one.” —Philip Goff, Professor of Philosophy at Durham University and author of Galileo’s Error: Foundations for a New Science of Consciousness and Why? The Purpose of the Universe

“Lights On will open your mind in multitudinous directions. It is the primer in consciousness studies that we all needed, but it is also a brilliant experiment in bringing together the sharpest perspectives on the living world’s greatest mystery. A mind-expanding listening experience.” —Zoë Schlanger, staff writer at The Atlantic and author of The Light Eaters: How the Unseen World of Plant Intelligence Offers a New Understanding of Life on Earth

“As the distinction between long-form podcasts and audio-exclusive books continues to blur, this title will stand out as an excellent example of the latter.”—Booklist (Starred Review)

The deep dive in to the science and philosophy of consciousness I've been waiting for. Beautifully written, composed, narrated and delivered. Accessible to all, yet deep enough for those interested. Thank you Annaka for shining a light on the topic!

Fascinating dive in to experience

Listening to the audiobook is really enjoyable. The music and sound effects are not usual in an audiobook and I really liked them.
The content of the book I found fascinating. At the end of the documentary I did not necessarily had answers to the very deep questions that are handled but I did have lots of new avenues of research to continue learning and maybe reaching my own conclusions.
I very much recommend the documentary to everyone interested in these topics.
Thank you!

Anneka, the question perhaps is not consciousness, it's the unstoppable urge to know. Look how despite all the discoveries, answers and new questions the ver urge to know is persistent and unstoppable. and for that matter to urge to utter it either to "oneself" or "others". the urge to know proceeds being-becoming. Maybe ultimate wonder is the what-who is the urge. I call it "Knowing proceeds being"

Anneka, bring to mind the analogy of dreams. in one sense the characters of a dream are separate, with seemingly different characteristics, the apparent various contents of a dream. in another sense they are one, it's this one dream... then the dreamer and so on.
this is one meaning of "This", "it's all here". like the dream analogy.
the holographic topic for example mentioned was already expressed many centuries ago with the analogy of dreams in Persian poetry: are we being dreamed? and who-what is the dreamer?

there's a rich vocabulary of wonder in Persian and Middle Eastern literature and poetry for these questions that can illuminate your imagination and quest.
Rumi wonders "among hundreds of thousands of Me's how come I am me?"
or "I'm in aw of meeting/knowing you (Devine), like a thought in your thoughts. the form/mathematics/being of my thoughts is of yours, as if I am your words and sentences " (hard to translate to English from Persian)
works of Bahaullah especially "Seven Valleys"give some poetic language to this. I'm working on sharing my wonders about it with the world.

oh, the language of "self is an illusion" can be expanded to "self is incomplete", somewhat similar to Incompleteness that Kurt Gödel was poiting to.

Anneka, I deeply appreciate your bravery to give voice to to your urge to know,
I silently wonder along and with you in realms of silence.
from time to time I try to voice it here at Miladrezaei dot com
