The war between the houses of Lancaster and York was characterised by treachery, deceit and bloody battles. Alison Weir's lucid and gripping account focuses on the human side of history. At the centre of the book stands Henry VI, the pious king whose mental instability led to political chaos, and his wife Margaret of Anjou, who took up her arms in her husband’s cause and battled in a violent man's world.©1995 Alison Weir (P)2012 W F Howes Ltd

Great account of the wars of the roses

I appreciate that this book was probably written for a general readership and as such it goes for clear narrative over nuance. In doing so it leans heavily into the Yorkist viewpoint. This is a shame as the complexity of the politics and personalities of this period are IMO its defining features and what make it a fascinating study. York was no paragon of virtue and neither was Margaret of Anjou. Yet in this account, in a sweeping manner, York is always described as acting "justifiably". Margaret is shown - from the very start - as a kind of vindictive teenage dominatrix.
All that said, what I was hoping for from the early chapters was achieved. I appreciated the information about the establishment of the Lancastrian dynasty and the downfall of Richard II. This is vital background to what came to pass in the 15th century.
General popular history with a distinctly Yorkist flavour
