'Time travel, history and romance - what more could you ask for?' ⭐ ⭐⭐ ⭐⭐ reader review

--

They say that History is just one damned thing after another. Welcome to St Mary's Institute of Historical Research - where damned things happen every day.

When Dr Madeleine 'Max' Maxwell is recruited by St Mary's, she finds their methods to be somewhat unorthodox. They don't just study the past - they actually visit it, carefully observing historical events as they unfold in real time.

And not dying. This last part is important.

The whole of History now lies before Max and her new colleagues, but, as she will discover, time travel is never straightforward. Because History doesn't like to be messed with, and danger lurks in every century...

Fast-paced, witty and delightfully unconventional, Just One Damned Thing After Another is the first in Jodi Taylor's beloved and bestselling Chronicles of St Mary's series. For fans of Terry Pratchett, Doctor Who, Genevieve Cogman and Ghosts.

great story, wonderful speaker, I really loved her voice. I am not a native speaker, the possibility to reduce the speed suited me fine. I look forward to hear more books read by Zara Ramm

I love everything about Max and St. Mary's: funny, fantastical, outrageous time travel adventures - I read and heard the series many many times

One of my favorite series

This is the first book in the St Mary’s chronicles and it’s about a secretive institution that carries out historical research. If that sounds boring, think again - it’s via time travel which involves danger, death and intrigue. If there was ever an aptly named book it was this one! Things kept happening all the time with hardly a breathing space. On the one hand I enjoyed it very much, it was action-packed, funny, informative and constantly surprising. One thing I perhaps missed was more empathy with the main character, Madeline Maxwell (“Max”) who was clever, funny but hard to emotionally attach to. Overall, this book has piqued my interest and I will continue the series!
The narrator was superb - just how I imagined Max would sound!

Very apt title - I was breathless with all the action!

First half is pretty good and things go down hill from there (not unusually, its not hard to write a fun start). The plot just becomes very much what the title says towars the end, a typical example of the "but then..." style of writing that aims to keep ypu on your toes but ultimately feels hollow and a bit boring. Storywise I was a bit disappointed at the unimaginative approach to history, with the author firmly convinced that we know everything about history and everything is basically as expected wherever they go. She cements this view with a nudge to Plato's mention of Atlantis, writing in a letter of his recanting it as a cheese dream, because there is just no way that there mysteries in history we just don't understand. The ither major issue is the romantic subplot. Her man is one of the least likable guy for a romantic lead I have read in ages. He mostly comments on her drinking and while he gets to have emotional outbursts, she is not, and basically he keeps a million secrets from her and she is not, and after getting sexually assaulted several times in the book (seriously... Its a bit much) and he knows this, their forst

Over stretches quite entertaining if you turn off your brain
