When Stephanie Plum is woken up in the middle of the night by the sound of footsteps in her apartment, she wishes she didn’t keep her gun in the cookie jar in her kitchen. And when she finds out the intruder is fellow apprehension agent Diesel, six feet of hard muscle and bad attitude whom she hasn’t seen in more than two years, she still thinks the gun might come in handy.
Turns out Diesel and Stephanie are on the trail of the same fugitive: Oswald Wednesday, an international computer hacker as brilliant as he is ruthless. Stephanie may not be the most technologically savvy sleuth, but she more than makes up for that with her dogged determination, her understanding of human nature, and her willingness to do just about anything to bring a fugitive to justice. Unsure if Diesel is her partner or her competition, she’ll need to watch her back every step of the way as she works to draw Wednesday out from behind his computer and into the real world in this “action-packed caper filled with crazy twists and some nail-biting suspense” (Booklist, starred review).

Opinie krytyków
"King's performance welcomes listeners into Stephanie Plum's world. She is masterful in delivering the unique personalities that drive the plot. Fans will be delighted."
In the US, the rumor is that Janet Evanovich (by now almost 80 years old) does not write the Stephanie Plum novels herself anymore. Best guess of a lot of fans: her daughter has taken over, keeping the 'brand name' on the cover, as that's the main selling point.
Why this rumor?
The characters are still there, but they walk and talk differently. The humor is gone almost completely, the sass is gone, the human factor is gone, everything that made this special is gone. Someone is going through the motions, is using the well-known template and the familiar names - but the narrative voice is only a shadow of its former self.
Either Janet Evanovich is still writing this but can't be bothered to care anymore; or this a ghost writer has taken over. You could feel it before, in earlier books, but in this one, it practically jumps out at you.
Then there's the storyline: [spoiler alert] Lula finally gets shot. Two bullets in the leg. Leg wounds are potentially fatal as anybody who know anything about shot wounds in legs and blood loss knows. Does Stephanie Plum care? Nope. She doesn't even go to the hospital with Lula. She sends someone else, while she meets Diesel. If this is not out of character, then what is? The author - whoever she might be - treats the whole 'Lula gets shot' event as if someone has broken a fingernail. No interest, big fat yawn. My guess: Janet Evanovich might still have worked on the plot, came up with this plot twist, but definitely someone else then wrote it. Someone who makes one beginners' writers' mistake after the other. Like telling us again and again how sexy Diesel is, apparently oblivious of the old 'show don't tell' rule: don't tell us he's sexy; show us. This does not work. At all.
Dear Miss Janet Evanovich,
please start writing your own books again or - if you really can't or don't want to anymore -, please stop letting others ruin what used to be a brilliant series.
Many thanks,
a(n ex-) fan
;-)
Best guess: not written by Janet Evanovich anymore
