‘They stood together in the gloom of the spruces, an empty world glimmering about them wide and gray under the stars.’
Published in 1911 and later adapted for the big screen, Ethan Frome is a haunting account of isolation, confinement and the tension between duty and freedom.
Set during a bleak and unforgiving winter in Massachusetts, our titular character Ethan Frome leads a life of quiet drudgery. Surrounded by desolate farms in the New England mountains, and trapped in a loveless marriage with no means to escape, Frome resigns to misery – until an unexpected spark of hope arrives in the form of Mattie Silver, Ethan’s wife’s young and vivacious cousin. But, as Ethan soon comes to discover, desire comes at a cost and comes with irrevocable consequences. Quietly devastating and rich in psychological insight, Ethan Frome is a stark and unforgettable portrait of passion crushed by responsibility and circumstance.
