A “Philosophy of Results” for our Broken Age
In Esoterika, scholar of esotericism Mitch Horowitz draws upon inner teachings to take a hammer to conformity, whether from peers or our therapeutic and spiritual cultures. Beneath this lies the truer self you have lost.
The ideas and formulas in Esoterika are an astringent solution to familiar wisdom and authorized paths. The book’s principles, Mitch writes, “if practiced seriously, will change you in positive ways. You will be more agentic, expressive, and, hence, happier. For the determined, this change occurs quickly.”
Esoterika reconstitutes neglected fragments from Hermetic (Greek-Egyptian), Abrahamic (Judaic-Christian-Sufi), and modern esoteric, occult, and magickal traditions, and weds them to your lived experience.
Everything in its chapters is meant to be tried. The hour is late. Esoterika is the accelerant for which many have waited.
©2026 Mitch Horowitz (P)2026 G&D MediaBy now, it seems the system has won.
In his latest book, he comes across primarily as exhausted and frustrated. At times, even downright pessimistic and negative. He would probably call it “realistic,” but so be it.
Ultimately, the book is a string of personal anecdotes, which he uses to convey grand truths about life and existence as such. But they come from the perspective of someone who seems to have been defeated by life.
On top of that, listening to him is actually quite exhausting. I’ve seen some of his talks on YouTube, where he seems to speak more freely and spontaneously, and that clearly suits him much better.
When reading his own text aloud, he sounds like a news anchor. Extremely matter-of-fact, with what feels like an exclamation mark at the end of every other sentence.
What a shame. For the time spent, but also for Mitch.
I hope he feels better again someday.
