“Pink’s ideas deserve a wide hearing. Corporate boards. . .could do well by kicking out their pay consultants for an hour and reading Pink’s conclusions instead.”—Forbes

The New York Times
bestseller that gives readers paradigm-shattering ways to think about motivation from the author of When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing

Most people believe that the best way to motivate is with rewards like money—the carrot-and-stick approach. That's a mistake, says Daniel H. Pink (author of To Sell Is Human: The Surprising Truth About Motivating Others). In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction-at work, at school, and at home—is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Drawing on four decades of scientific research on human motivation, Pink exposes the mismatch between what science knows and what business does—and how that affects every aspect of life. He examines the three elements of true motivation—autonomy, mastery, and purpose-and offers smart and surprising techniques for putting these into action in a unique book that will change how we think and transform how we live.

Good overview on the topic of motivation. I would have appreciated more data and studies to be woven in as well as more acknowledgment that at the moment, we still have many jobs that people are not necessarily intrinsically motivated to do. Also, it would be interesting to focus more on how one can inspire intrinsic Motivation.

Interesting read, fit for business who rely on innovation and creativity

I started this book with an interest in the business aspect of motivation. What I learned and took away does impact all areas of my life. Work, relationships, childcare... very thought provoking and I still have to digest the insights.

Thought provoking... with an overall impact for all areas of life

The importance of intrinsic motivation gets presented, at times using subtle fallacies and silly buzzwords. Many referenced experiments are interesting. And the overall, bird's eye conclusion does seem more or less correct. Overall, IMO it was too shallow to justify its length. A point about rewards distracting from intrinsic motivation was well-made. But otherwise, I could've done without a lot of rehashing of common talking points and would be interested in a more detailed and rigorous analysis of where motivation actually comes from, a topic barely scratched here. Instead, you hear about a "human operating system 3.0", how unexpressed motivations somehow refute economics, and similar cues to roll your eyes.

Not exactly wrong, not exactly dense in insight
