It is 2001 in New York City, in the lull between the collapse of the dot-com boom and the terrible events of September 11th.
Maxine Tarnow runs a fine little fraud investigation business on the Upper West Side. All is ticking over nice and normal, until she starts looking into the finances of a computer-security firm and its billionaire geek CEO. She soon finds herself mixed up with a drug runner in an art deco motorboat, a professional nose obsessed with Hitler’s aftershave, a neoliberal enforcer with footwear issues, and an array of bloggers, hackers, code monkeys, and entrepreneurs, some of whom begin to show up mysteriously dead. Foul play, of course.
Will perpetrators be revealed, forget about brought to justice? Will Maxine have to take the handgun out of her purse? Will Jerry Seinfeld make an unscheduled guest appearance? Will accounts secular and karmic be brought into balance?

Te tytuły mogą Ci się spodobać
In the end what pynchon delivers is a silly little story that goes nowhere and displays the kind of poor understanding of technology, business and politics you would expect from an aging stoner for whom the sixties never ended. Especially the language he puts into his character's mouth's feels almost cringeworthily anachronistic considering the subject.
This narrator doesn't help things when she channels a middle aged jewish lady reciting words that were clearly written for Johnny Depp's famous hunter s thompson impersonation.
The result is test of patience at many times while of course flashes of brilliance shine through here and there given the immense experience and talent of the author.

The reader is not good enough for a professional recording. She does not follow the sentence structure and seems not capable of keeping two voices in a dialogue apart. She tries, but always end up mixing the persons voices up, making the story very hard to follow. This recording should be withdrawn and re-recorded.Würden Sie es noch mal mit einem anderen Hörbuch mit Jeannie Berlin versuchen?
