I am a great fan of Robin McKinley's works and this is her debut novel. It is a retelling of a Beauty and the Beast (the original Fairy Tale). I have already read the book at least 5 times, but I just love this story and it makes for a great audiobook, because you can listen to it again and again.

The narrator was charming. I really like the northern Bristish accent in some characters, that was very sweet. The only thing I missed: There could've been a little bit more music here and there, but all in all a wonderful audiobook!

Splendid Audiobook

It's a decently written and constructed retelling of Beaumont's Beauty and the Beast (not the older Villeneuve version, although the author must have known both). Some details have been changed or added to, but overall there really are no surprises here. The characters are likeable enough, but I didn't truly connect with any of them, or waited impatiently for the couple to get together. Overall I missed some inventiveness and character. Everything is just kind of bland and vanilla, and everybody's too perfect, too nice and respectful. The ending also felt so overly perfect that it got tacky. BUT I really did get the book to have a soothing comforting listening experience during a stressful time, and this story certainly delivered that, so I shouldn't complain too much. And the narrator was quite good!
