En route, members of the movie crew and ship's company begin to die under mysterious circumstances. The crew's doctor, Marlowe, finds himself enmeshed in a violent, multi-layered plot in which very few of the persons aboard are whom they claim to be.
Marlowe's efforts to unravel the plot become even more complicated once the movie crew is deposited ashore on Bear Island, beyond the reach of the law or outside help. The murders continue ashore, and Marlowe, who is not what he seems to be either, discovers they may be related to some forgotten events of the Second World War.

MacLean always delivers.
I loved the arctic setting and the remote Location for a suspense thriller.

Hier liegt der seltene Fall vor, dass der Film die Schwächen des Buches erkennt und bereits nach rund 5 Minuten die Insel zum Schauplatz der Handlung wird.
Lieber den Film gucken!
My English Review: The movie was better... I got the audio book because of the 1979 film "Bear Island". Unfortunately, the book plods along incredibly slowly with dialogue that no one would speak. Half of the story of the book also takes place on the ship that the film crew (not scientists like in the film) takes to the island and even on the island the action doesn't get going.
This is the rare case where the film recognizes the weaknesses of the book and after just 5 minutes the island becomes the setting for the story.
Better watch the movie!
