Title: The Boy Who Argued with the River

Level: Advanced (C1-C2)

Description

In the valley of Redwater, every child learns three lessons before their seventh birthday: how to swim, how to mend a net, and how to look away when the river takes somebody. Seven-year-old Pell has learned two of them. He still looks, and he still asks the questions nobody wants to answer. Last Water Night, the river took his sister.

With ten days left until the next ceremony, and his own name now in the lottery jar, Pell walks alone to the old stone bridge at dusk and does what no one in three hundred years has dared to do: he speaks to the river god and demands to read the contract. What he finds in the faded clay, and the one question the god cannot answer, will change the valley forever.

The Boy Who Argued with the River is an original myth, written for advanced English learners in a tender, lyrical register. It builds toward a complete and moving ending in which a sister comes home, an ancient bargain is rewritten, and a festival of fear becomes a festival of questions.
