A crown worth killing for – 10 gripping full-cast dramas of ambition, betrayal and royal intrigue.
Behind every crown lies a story of ambition, loyalty and betrayal – and across centuries of royal history, the struggle for power has rarely been peaceful.
Spanning almost eight hundred years of history, this compelling collection of full-cast BBC dramas enters the turbulent world of kings, queens, princes and pretenders, where the fate of a nation can turn on a single death, a divided family or a contested crown.
The story begins in medieval England with one of the monarchy’s most enduring mysteries: the suspicious death of William Rufus, son of William the Conqueror, killed by an arrow while hunting in the New Forest. Was it simply a tragic accident – or did something altogether more sinister lie behind the king’s death?
From there, the dramas move into the volatile world of the Plantagenets and the controversial reign of King John, exploring a monarch at odds with the Church and influenced by the beliefs and traditions of his formidable ancestry. As royal authority collides with religion, loyalty and personal conviction, the Crown becomes as much a burden as a prize.
The dynastic struggles of medieval England continue through the Wars of the Roses, an age in which families fought for supremacy and kings could be made – and destroyed – by those closest to them. At its heart is the extraordinary relationship between Edward IV and the powerful Earl of Warwick, the legendary ‘Kingmaker’, as friendship, political necessity and personal ambition collide in the struggle between Lancaster and York.
With the restoration of the Stuarts comes another battle for the future of the monarchy. Charles II faces turmoil within his own family as questions of religion and succession threaten the stability of the Crown. His brother James’s Catholic faith and the ambitions of Charles’s illegitimate son, the Duke of Monmouth, create a dangerous conflict between blood, belief and political survival. The consequences reverberate into the next generation, as the exiled Stuart dynasty dreams of reclaiming its lost throne. Repeated hopes of restoration end in disappointment until those ambitions are inherited by a new figure: Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Finally, the collection moves into the Victorian era and the very different world of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Remembered for racing, gambling and the pleasures of society, the future Edward VII also possessed considerable diplomatic instincts and a keen understanding of European affairs – revealing another side to a prince who spent decades waiting to become king.
Rich in conspiracy, rivalry, forbidden ambition and divided loyalties, these dramas look beyond the pageantry of monarchy to the men and women caught within it, bringing the dangerous, fascinating and deeply human history behind the Crown vividly to life.
