The Dr. Rod Berger Show is presented by Fair Observer. Before every run into the badlands of south-central Iraq, David Holdridge sat in the back of a beat-up car and rehearsed his own execution.Dr. Rod Berger sits down with David Holdridge for a second conversation, more than two years after their first. Holdridge led an infantry platoon outside Chu Lai in 1969 and came home wounded. He spent 18 months in hospitals and neuropsychiatric wards until a Hartford neurosurgeon found the nerve behind his causalgia and cut it. Then came 40 years of humanitarian work among people living through war, exploitation and poverty. Rod wants to know where the caring started and why it still burns. Holdridge traces it to a 16-year-old prep school kid on an Amtrak train, watching an old man on a fire escape listen to the Dodgers on his radio. From there, the stories run hot. A former smuggler named Ahmed Kadir dresses Holdridge as a sick old man in a kaffiyeh and drives him into Iraq's badlands to meet the sheikhs. Off Lebanon, a sailboat called the Sea Queen carries about 26 Palestinian women, children and old men out to an Israeli missile boat, while Holdridge waits two hours in a cabin and the captain runs his name all the way to the Pentagon. In Iraq, a fatwa from Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani protects his team while bounty posters with his face hang in the souks. Holdridge turns just as hard on the system he served. He calls the USAID of recent decades moribund and "not worth saving," and says less than 30 percent of the money reached his people in Iraq. His fix fits in five words: nothing about us without us. What would change if the people receiving help wrote the plan?Guest: David Holdridge, Vietnam veteran, 40-year humanitarian worker and author of The Water AboveKey topicsWhere caring starts: an old man on a New York fire escape and a young preppy who chose to live in the South BronxRehearsing captivity: the private ritual Holdridge ran before every trip into south-central IraqCausalgia, the neuropsychiatric ward and the seven-hour surgery that ended the painThe Sea Queen: a sailboat of refugees, an Israeli missile boat and a choice between Haifa and LarnacaWhy Holdridge says USAID had drifted from Kennedy's vision into bureaucracy and earmarksSafety without razor wire: the Sistani fatwa and the Arab code that hid him from ZarqawiThe hope meter: Congress, the midterms, Gaza and the promise Kennedy made in the sixtiesResourcesDavid Holdridge's books (The Water Above; Charity Overseas; The Avant Garde of Western Civ, winner of Prize Americana): https://www.davidholdridge.com/#booksDavid Holdridge on Substack: https://davidholdridge.substack.comDavid Holdridge at Fair Observer: https://www.fairobserver.com/author/david-holdridge/Rod's first conversation with David Holdridge: https://www.fairobserver.com/podcasts/a-vietnam-veterans-journey-from-battle-to-humanitarian-efforts/Fair Observer: https://www.fairobserver.comDr. Rod Berger: https://drrodberger.comChapters00:00 Welcome back: a follow-up with a friend Rod has never met in person03:25 Where the caring started: the old man on the fire escape06:02 The South Bronx and a life without that aura of fear07:49 Rehearsing his own execution: Ahmed Kadir and the runs into Iraq12:42 The cost: causalgia, the neuropsychiatric ward and Dr. Whitcomb14:08 The Sea Queen and the Israeli missile boat18:56 "You are not a damn saint": gratitude he could not accept23:01 USAID: Kennedy's vision and the bureaucracy it became27:11 Nothing about us without us: the Sistani fatwa and lines a kilometer long30:38 They bleed the same: Islamic history, Zarqawi and the protected guest39:20 Where the money went, and the heroes inside the system44:21 The hope meter: Congress, Gaza and Kennedy's promise Dr. Rod Berger is a keynote speaker, moderator, producer, author, and expert in strategic storytelling.
