Episode 66:
What if one of the most memorable souvenirs you bring home from Ireland is something you never knew existed?
In this episode of the Pull Over and Let Me Out Podcast, we’re heading to Knockcroghery in County Roscommon, a small village in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands with a remarkable story to tell.
I’m joined by Ethel Kelly of Ogham Wish, an artist and craftswoman who is bringing two fascinating pieces of Ireland’s heritage to life. Knockcroghery was once renowned for its handmade clay pipes, a tradition deeply woven into village life before the community was devastated in 1921. Today, Ethel has revived this extraordinary craft, making clay pipes by hand and keeping the story of Knockcroghery alive.
She also creates beautiful works inspired by Ogham, Ireland’s ancient form of writing, transforming centuries-old markings into meaningful art.
I had the opportunity to visit Knockcroghery myself and watch Ethel make the clay pipes, and it was one of those Ireland experiences that stays with you. In our conversation, we talk about the village’s fascinating history, the art of clay pipe making, the beauty of Ogham, and why preserving these traditions matters.
If you’re looking for the Ireland beyond the usual stops, come discover this special corner of the Hidden Heartlands and a souvenir with a story of its own.
