A 6-Week Artist’s Way Program
Julia Cameron has been teaching the world about creativity since her seminal book, The Artist’s Way, first broke open the conversation around art.
Now, in Write for Life, she turns to one of the subjects closest to her heart: the art and practice of writing.
Over the course of six weeks, Cameron carefully guides listeners step by step through the creative process. This latest guide in the Artist’s Way Series:
- Introduces a new tool and expands on powerful tried-and-true methods.
- Gently guides listeners through many common creative issues—from procrastinating and getting started, to dealing with doubt, deadlines, and “crazymakers.”
- Will help you reach your goals, whether your project is a novel, poetry, screenplay, standup, or songwriting.
With the learned experience of a lifetime of writing, Cameron gives listeners practical tools to start, pursue, and finish their writing project. Write for Life is an essential book for writers who have completed The Artist’s Way and are looking to continue their creative journey or new writers who are just putting pen to paper.

"In this luminous new book, Julia Cameron whisks you so effortlessly along a six-week writing adventure that you will barely notice you have written the first draft of a book until she deposits you back on your doorstep. There is a book in you, a ripe fruit, ready to drop into your hand. Write for Life is the gust of wind you've been waiting for."—Mirabai Starr, Author of Wild Mercy & Caravan of No Despair
"[A] boon to those struggling to get started. Aspiring writers will appreciate the solid advice."—Publisher's Weekly
Sprinkled in between are a take-aways for writers, maybe 2 per chapter, which could have been summarized in 2 pages. Those are actually quite nice. But to get there is a real bore unfortunately.
Here are the take-aways:
-Write 3 pages longhand of Morning Pages every day. Vent, dream, dare, write! First 1,5 pages are easy, but then slowly really honest and deep parts are being revealed.
Morning pages also trains you to write quickly.
-Keep your quota. Write 3 pages for screen, 2 pages for prose every day.
-Prayer: "Ok God, you take care of the quality. I take care of the quantity."
-Artist-date: give yourself time with yourself for a creative adventure once a week for 2 hours.
-Go for a walk every day for 20 min.
-Laying track: just do your quota, write what you have to get from A to B. You can correct errors later.
-Grabbing time: "Just write for 20 minutes, and then I give you a treat." Often leads to good and long writing sessions.
-Treat the inner critic like a bully. Say "NO!"
-Could you make a healthy deadline? Or is it hurting you?
-Less is more. Easy does it.
-Connect with other writers.
-Dismantle limiting beliefs.
-Media abstinence.
This book should have been much shorter!
