Bisher schwächster Band der Reihe

Mein Fazit:

Der bisher schwächste Band der Peter Grant-Reihe. Nicht so spannend, nicht so einfallsreich und auch nicht so herrlich durchgeknallt wie die Vorgänger. Gerettet wird das (Hör)buch durch Aaronovitch's stilistischen Charme, literarische Querverweise, tolle Dialoge und die starken Charaktere. Peter, Nightingale und vor allem Lesley sorgen dafür, das man der Serie trotz Schwächen die Treue hält. Und natürlich der wunderbare Sprecher, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, mit seiner unglaublichen Wandlungsfähigkeit und ungebrochenem Schwung.

Zum Sprecher:

Ich werde den Teufel tun und mich über Kobna Holdbrook-Smith beschweren. Mit seiner Vielseitigkeit, was Stimmen, Stimmung und Akkzente angeht, macht er auch WHISPERS UNDERGROUND wieder zu einer einzigen Party für die Ohren. Allein schon für Lesley's Darstellung bekommt er dicke Extrapunkte: Den Spagat aus kieferorthopädisch bedingtem Genuschel und koketter Schlagfertigkeit muss man erst mal hinbekommen! Ich ziehe meinen Hut.Einen winzigen Kritikpunkt gibt es diesmal trotzdem. Die FBI-Agentin Reynolds statted Holdbrook-Smith mit einem wenig authentisch klingenden, zu breiten amerikanischen Akkzent aus, der nervt statt zu überzeugen. Es liegt vielleicht auch ein wenig an der grundsätzlich nervigen Figur, dass mir das so aufstößt, aber hier schießt mir der Sprecher dann doch über das Ziel hinaus.

Not for beginners: Magic gets more complicated

Another superb performance by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith: it is such a joy to listen to the voice and appreciate the various class and ethnic accents that make the story so much richer than the e-/print version.

But the story gets more and more complicated. While it was possible to understand and enjoy “Moon over Soho” without necessarily having read/listened to “Rivers of London” this is no longer the case here. Lack of prior knowledge of the characters and the rules that govern them makes it impossible to understand the plot.

And it is an expanding plot: acquiring now also the hint of international aspects (and I do not just refer to the female FBI agent who is really a redhead…) and discoveries deep underground. The hero and the plot almost get lost in the tunnels and sewers and suddenly the murder case the listener has almost forgotten is solved. Wow, magic – but not for beginners.

However if you are – like me - a fan of the series: enjoy. The hints are there: this book is a link between the beginnings and what is to follow in “Broken Homes” and (hopefully many more) further sequels.

Höchst unterhaltsam und sehr empfehlenswert!

Von den ersten drei Teilen, die alle höchst unterhaltsam und sehr empfehlenswert sind, hat mir dieser dritte Teil am besten gefallen.
Wie immer eine erstaunliche Geschichte und ein exzellenter Sprecher.
Ich werde mir sofort den vierten Teil anhören.

Crime, humour, magic!

I love these books. A brilliant combination of crime, fantasy and humour. The narrator is also amazing: his timing of the funny bits is spot on and his portrayal of the different characters is perfect.

Another good one

Feels like a bit of a filler but a joy to follow along nonetheless, the characters are unique but likable, it’s not easy to predict what will happen next and Aaronovitch‘s colourful way with words goes smoothly yet again.

Seriously addictive

The stories are good but Kobna Holdbrook-Smith makes the truly addictive. I thoroughly enjoy listening to him. His voice gives the story a power of its own.

Very entertaining sequel

Wonderfully narrated and the series continues to entertain and left me wanting to download book 4 immediately

The Peter Grant series is awesome.

Just finished this book, which is the third in the Peter Grant series, I believe. Amazing book series, incredibly well narrated. I'd recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat. The stories are unique and exciting, with a cast of very interesting characters. The perfect crime/fantasy mashup. That, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is an insanely good narrator who gives every character a unique voice, which just makes the audiobook all the more fun to listen to.

Bester Sprecher im englischsprachigen Raum.

Schöne Fortsetzung wenn auch nicht ganz so gut wie seine früheren Bücher. Der Sprecher ist der Hammer. Tolle Akzente und er singt sogar.
