An image appeared in her mind, a childhood memory she hadn't known it contained: a conductor leaning over her on a train late at night, speaking to her in a language she didn't speak, one of his eyes looking at her while the other stared, unblinking, straight through her. She felt her skin prickle everywhere at once.
Evelyn Lieberman has a busy social life and a close group of friends in her Florida retirement community. One of them recommends a novel by a famous British novelist, Simon Glaser, which she buys at the airport just a few weeks later. As she reads, she realises it is the story of her own childhood...
Born Evelyn Reiss in Vienna in 1931, she was sent away just before the outbreak of war and taken in by a single mother in Yorkshire, alongside a Polish boy named Szymon. Glaser's novel is not fiction at all; he was the little boy she lived with in England, and Kindness tells the story of their time together, which ended when a prank they played on their foster mother went horribly wrong. But it also tells a story that she sometimes doesn't recognise, including the real reason for their traumatic and abrupt separation.
Her life turned upside down, Evelyn is compelled to travel to London to find Simon and ask him why he changed a crucial detail about their shared story. The two agree to search for the house in Yorkshire where they spent a year together, so long ago. While this journey will provide Evelyn and Simon answers to lifelong mysteries about that time, it will also reveal new surprises about how those events have reverberated in the lives of others.©2027 Alexis Schaitkin (P)2027 Macmillan Audio

Two Lives is a story of unparalleled intimacy. The love between Evelyn and Simon defies categorization, as does the secret they alone carry. Alexis Schaitkin's writing is stunning, as is her unerring commitment to summoning characters in their totality. I read with my heart in my throat. Unforgettable
A deeply moving, exquisitely written novel of rare power... As Two Lives cuts back and forth between the present day and chapers of the novel-within-a-novel Kindness, the characters' experiences are rendered with the vividness of a picture postcard. Reflecting upon themes of loss and survival, this gripping novel pays tribute to the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit
Alexis Schaitkin has created two unforgettable characters whose lives intertwine over decades and continents in a riveting story of secrets, memories, heartbreak, and resilience: a book within a book for the ages. Two Lives is a dazzling and deeply moving novel from one of America's premier literary talents
Alexis Schaitkin has accomplished something brilliant and rare in this novel that bridges two eras while feeling wholly alive in the present. Written with grace, humor, and a fierce intelligence, Two Lives interrogates memory and the uneasy work of reconciling the lives we remember with the lives others remember for us. I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about this marvel of a book
In a time defined by cruelty, how can a child - or an octogenarian, for that matter - make sense of a stranger's kindness? Alexis Schaitkin never gives in to sentiment, which is precisely what makes this masterful, morally complex story so moving in the end
Two Lives is at once a wryly penetrating portrait of ageing in general, the Jewish version in south Florida in particular, and a cultural anthropology of the American upper middle class; a heartbreaking page-turner on the accidents of fate, the tragedies of the Kindertransport, and the way children deal with trauma by choosing to neither know nor wonder; and a consideration of both the solaces and limitations of a life spent pilfering from experience in the service of one's art
A powerful and perceptive story of love, loss, memory and aging
