Dieses war das erste Buch, das Hiaasen alleine geschrieben hat. Das erste in dem es um die Umwelt von Florida und ihre Feinde - die Bewohner und Besucher Floridas - geht. Seine zwei Helden sind dem Autor wohl nicht ganz zufällig ähnlich: der Kolumnist der immer zynischer und radikaler wird und der Privatdetektiv, der Reporter war und die Wahrheit nicht ertragen konnte.

Der absurde Humor und die grotesk überzeichneten Nebenfiguren, ob Biedermänner oder Möchtegerns, sind noch nicht auf dem Amok-Niveau wie etwa in "Stormy Weather", dafür ist die Handlung radikaler, mehr verzweifelt als zynisch.

George Wilson leiht der Geschichte eine geradezu ideale Stimme. Ruhig und beherrscht und gerade deshalb die Absurdität des Lebens in Südflorida zum Leben erweckend. Auch außerhalb der Saison...

Having stumbled upon Carl Hiaasen via the Audible plus (free) section, I’m becoming quite the fan. My very first impression was that, while funny, these books were rooted in their time and place: 1980s Florida, and that the overdrawn characters were merely caricatures of themselves. However, I ended up enjoying this one so much that there must have been more to it, there was definitely character development and subtleties to enjoy.

The plot was crazy but not unbelievable: a bunch of misfit extremists are so disgusted by the selling out of nature to make space for tourists and unlimited construction that they start a terrorist cell of murder and mayhem to scare them all away. Instead of being dated, this book was way ahead of its time, and it highlights so much about human nature. I really enjoyed it and can recommend it.
