Great book bad ending

This is book #4 in the reading order of the Witcher books and boy oh boy do we have a high note in the middle here! This is the best novel so far, and absolutely on par with #1 in the reading order - the collection of short stories in "The last wish".

Absolutely sensational descriptions of conclaves, gatherings, group behaviour, decision making, political intrigue and awesome character development. Also very flowy introduction of new characters and just such a quick entry into new scenes. This book is by far the best world-building in the series so far. As in the other books, it becomes a bit touch-and-go when Ciri gets to discover her powers and the author struggles with not making magical visions too clichee, but it's a good balance I think. There are also good explanations for why certain magical solutions that pop into your head as a reader are not possible right now, so it's fine.

But then... the ending. This book tapers out with a bad aftertaste. A very dull and slow ending, last-minute character introductions that are probably supposed to set up the next book, a cliffhanger that's not really thrilling (empty threats with no real feeling of danger), and worst of all a kind of... sexual assault scene that suddenly isn't one anymore just because the assaultant changes? Very confused writing and no nice bow to tie up the end with all the other characters we've grown to love throughout the book but are missing for the last chapters.

Characters come alive in the dirty and unfair world of the Witcher with the readers voice.

The reader once again performs marvelously; giving each character not only a speech pattern but fitting accents and dialects to them.

The story is befitting of the Witcher universe but appears somewhat too nice in this part of the series.
The book is very obviously written as a part of a bigger series and could have done with a finish that is not as tv-series like as it is.

Overall all my criticism is on a high level and only existent at all due to my high expectations.

If you like fantasy and characters that are not simply good or evil you will like the Witcher.
