Ich höre mir die meisten Hörbücher, die ich auch als Buch habe, nicht bis zum Ende an. Lesen geht einfach schneller als Vorlesen, vor allem, wenn es spannend ist. Außerdem fährt man ja nicht stundenlang Auto… Aber der Sprecher dieses Hörbuches macht seine Sache so gut, gibt jedem Akteur / jeder Akteurin eine eigene Stimme oder Stimmlage oder Dialekt, dass das Zuhören diese eine Mal interessanter war als selbst zu lesen. Super!

Alexander Vlahos is absolutely superb as a narrator. His voice is extremely versatile and gives every character of this story a convincing flavour. The book itself is a captivating, amusing and wonderfull escape from the reality. Even though one can guess how the story will develop. The language, the dialogues and the descriptions are beyond brilliant.

I have loved this novel since I first read it more than 40 years ago, so I excuse its gender representation and the way it implies that "nobility" is innate (and so is commonness, of course).
I enjoyed the recording, although as others have said, it is a pity nobody taught the speaker even the basics of French pronunciation. His voice is not at all how I had imagined the Duke of Avon, but it made me think of Avon in a different, interesting way: younger, more playful, more effete in a Wildean kind of way. I liked that!

This is one of my favourite Heyer books and all in all, Alexander Vlahos did the characters justice. BUT - please, please! before you perform a book that is set for the most part in Paris among the French aristocracy and with all the main characters with French ties (the mother of the Alastairs was French), do learn correct French pronunciation!!! E. g., the plural-s is NOT pronounced ("Messieurs"), most final consonants aren't either ("Armand" ends with a nasal o-sound, not with a d, and the stress is usually on the last syllable.
And why do so many performers think they have to depict French characters by making them speak English with a very bad French accent - in situations where obviously everyone is speaking French???
I love the story but having to listen to so much bad French threw me constantly out of it.

Do learn French pronunciation, please!

These old Shades ist mein Lieblingsbuch von Georgette Heyer. Der Sprecher setzt es ganz toll um, das Zuhören macht Freude. Viel besser als die deutsche Hörbuchversion. Großes Dankeschön an das Audible Team, dass diese Version für den Kauf in Deutschland bereitgestellt wurde!
