Über diesen Titel

In the sequel to Clockwork Boys, Slate, Brenner, Caliban and Learned Edmund have arrived in Anuket City, the source of the mysterious Clockwork Boys. They even managed to build some trust in each other's skills. That trust is built on quicksand as the risks continue to escalate. But the secrets they're keeping could well destroy them, before the city even gets the chance...

Old foes and consequences of past decisions lurk in the shadows. Every team member's skills are required to succeed - even more so if they hope to survive.

The Wonder Engine never lets us forget our funny, broken group even as the action propels our heroes to new highs and lows. It shows that making the most of the rest of your life can be rewarding - no matter how many mechanical abominations you need to destroy to get there.

You start out with a heroic fantasy novel with a bit of romance, beautifully built characters who form quiet an explosive group prone to different kinds tensions and dynamics and you end up with a beautifully evolving ( if in some parts not entirely unforseeable) storyline that leaves you feeling heartbroken and emotionally full at the same time. A story that grows on you and to grow on.

Beautiful and unexpectedly deep

Der Plot der sich über zwei Bücher aufbaut war doch unerwartet! Ich habe zuerst die Paladin Reihe gehört und ich liebe Verknüpfungen sehr.

Plot

I loved this book as much as the first one! We continue the story of our group of unlikely heroes just as they reach Anouket City and now have to find out the secret behind the monstrous Clocktaurs.

The plot is suspenseful but steadily paced and focuses a lot on the characters and their relationship. I loved how some of the characters grew and changed, and of course, there is the budding love between Caliban and Slate that is just as sweet as all the romances T. Kingfisher writes. But I also greatly enjoyed how Learned Edmund changed throughout the story. I think it’s great how the author manages to write characters that are so flawed but also extremely likable. They just seem so real that way.
The banter was top-notch as always and had me laughing out loud at times. I also loved that we got a lot more time with the gnolls. They are so fascinating, and their view on humans is just hilarious.

And then there is the ending… I did not see it coming, and it kind of broke me. I was literally at the edge of my seat for the last pages.

Solution to the Clocktaur War

For fans of romantic fantasy, who like free female characters and male characters that don’t fall into toxic masculinity whenever something doesn’t go their way: this is your book.
It has some a bit scary parts in it (at least if you’re sensitive like me), basically no spicy scenes. It plays in a well imagined world with carefully thought out characters.

Also I love Christine hvamps way of narrating a story. She has a lot of strength in her voice and is able to give very different characters their perfect voice, never making them weaker or somehow less than they are.

Great narrator and captivating story

T Kingfisher just delivers wonderfully in this exciting and emotional story in her "world of the white rat". I especially loved the end. I recommend!

Wow, what a brilliant moving story

I already knew the story and loved it and I really liked how well it has been performed. As I like to listen in the evenings to calm down, sometimes female voices have an occasional very high pitch that pulls me out of a story. Especially as this story also has some important male characters, it was great that these were as well read as the rest. The whole performance fitted the plot very well and it was a joy to listen as Khristine Hvam who has a great range in voice acting going high and low as needed.

Loved it a lot

Anyways, all the characters here are so „human“. Even the problems during this heroic quest are so blatandly human. I love that.

I really love the way Kingfisher tells stories
