Veteran police chief Eli Gallagher doesn't ask for much, but he does insist that his officers uphold the "serve" part of "serve and protect". Conscientious young Deputy Stan Leach takes Eli's moto to heart, maintaining a high standard of personal accountability.
When Eli's long-distance boyfriend, Gilbert Nees, telephones from Philadelphia, Eli thinks he intends to further cement their relationship. Unfortunately, Gilbert's news is anything but good. But Eli doesn't have time to wallow, because a violent act results in murder in the small town of Morristown, Mississippi.
But as Eli and Stan uncover evidence, their personal lives begin to unravel. Stan, working closely with Chief Gallagher, grows increasingly attached to Eli and learns what it really means to be an advocate of justice.

Review on „The Winter Dark“- Audio Book Version
Was hat Ihnen am allerbesten an The Winter Dark gefallen?
Somehow I had totally missed this awesome short story before. Now the Audio Book production brought it to my attention, lucky me! I used the Whispersync function to this well-crafted, captivating work of J.S.Cook and discovered that K.C. Kelly's voice talent increases the story's atmosphere tenfold, really bringing its characters alive.
Welcher Moment von The Winter Dark ist Ihnen besonders im Gedächtnis geblieben?
Scenes like Eli travelling to Pennsylvania only to find out he would never be more than Gilbert's little secret, were already intense to read. Listening to those arrogant party guests making Eli feel so unwelcome, really made me wanting to smack them. Eli & Stan realize ,although it hurts them, both decide against settling with their current partners for less just to escape their loneliness. It takes both men up to the last chapter of the story to find out, that despite the gap in age and position, they fit together perfectly.
Gab es im Hörbuch einen Moment, der Sie ganz besonders berührt hat?
I especially love this last part where Mr.Kelly has done a marvellous job interpreting those strong emotions, vibrantly portraying both men. Chief Eli with his smooth drawl and calm seniority is easy to distinguish from the younger, soft-spoken, reliable Officer Stan's voice. Stan respects his boss, but also trusts him deeply and lets Eli see his barefaced emotions after a gruesome murder case shakes him badly. He turns to Eli for help, leaning on to his strong presence. And Eli holds him warm and secure, not letting Stan go again.
Ahhh,, the end is so sweet, it really melted my heart and chased away the winter 's darkness!
