Based on Stanford University psychologist Kelly McGonigal's wildly popular course "The Science of Willpower," The Willpower Instinct is the first book to explain the science of self-control and how it can be harnessed to improve our health, happiness, and productivity.

Informed by the latest research and combining cutting-edge insights from psychology, economics, neuroscience, and medicine, The Willpower Instinct explains exactly what willpower is, how it works, and why it matters. For example, readers will learn:

   •  Willpower is a mind-body response, not a virtue. It is a biological function that can be improved through mindfulness, exercise, nutrition, and sleep.
   •  Willpower is not an unlimited resource. Too much self-control can actually be bad for your health.
   •  Temptation and stress hijack the brain's systems of self-control, but the brain can be trained for greater willpower
   •  Guilt and shame over your setbacks lead to giving in again, but self-forgiveness and self-compassion boost self-control.
   •  Giving up control is sometimes the only way to gain self-control.
   •  Willpower failures are contagious—you can catch the desire to overspend or overeat from your friends—but you can also catch self-control from the right role models.

In the groundbreaking tradition of Getting Things Done, The Willpower Instinct combines life-changing prescriptive advice and complementary exercises to help readers with goals ranging from losing weight to more patient parenting, less procrastination, better health, and greater productivity at work.

"What a liberating book! McGonigal explains the scientific reality of willpower, exploding the myths most of us believe. Stronger willpower—based on inspiring facts, not oppressive nonsense—is finally within everyone's reach."

This book was a surprise. I thought I knew everything I needed to understand why I do or don’t do what I committed to. This is not my first book on this topic. Yet, I experienced a lot of AHA moments that have already changed my life. This book is packed with knowledge and practical advice at the same time. I will definitely relisten to it multiple times.

Extremely Useful and Well Researched

In my opinion it's a really great audiobook. The narrator is great and the book itself is great as well.
It switches between (simplified) cientific explanations and studies to stories of real people so it stays interesting and doesn't get too dry.
The explanations themselfes are pretty simple too, but they get the point across.
Great book, worth every cent.

I love the humorous ironic way that she used at the end how the book, that how she joked about what the scientists are doing in the lab, it reminds me of her TedTalk a lot.

She starts easy with telling us what is will power then goes deeper and deeper by explaining how dopamine affects our body and mind, then briefly talked about stress, then tells us why we fail and at last introduced social influences and accepting our mind as strategies to improve our willpower. The entire book is well structured. Each chapter all structured in a first theory then practice manner, which helper the reader to firstly have a good understanding of these practices, then do them.

A real eye opening book
