Über diesen Titel

All Lady Victoria Kirby wants is to dig in the dirt, take notations, and record history, thank you very much. Bumbling through ballrooms and getting disdained by the ton for her less than ideal looks, on the other hand, is the last thing she wants. But her reckless father has a different idea for her future when he puts up the ultimate ante - her hand in marriage - and loses. Over her dead body.

The Duke of Chase cannot bear to see a woman misused. After all, he saw that often enough as a child. So when he's witness to a marquess gambling away his daughter to a lecher of a man, he has no choice but to step in and rescue her. Lady Victoria has a reputation for being as tart as a lemon and as bitter as one, too. So, he may have just found the perfect wife to keep a promise he made to himself long ago-to never have an heir. With her, surely, he'll never be tempted to take her to bed and break that promise.

But when he meets the wild, witty, intelligent young lady he's bound to marry, he knows trouble is headed his way.... And everything he ever swore to uphold may very well come undone, especially his heart.

Contains mature themes.

Predictable story that would have been tolerable, were it not for the uninspired performance of the voice actor.

Mediocre through and through

Without having read a statistic I would wager that the readers of Victorian novels are predominantly modern, working women who wear trousers and feed themselves and often their families and who are - if at all - married to men who are not overtly masculine. They are reading Victorian novels because they are dead tired of modern gender roles (or the lack thereof) and want to flee into a more traditional world, in which a woman can just wear pretty dresses, marry a sexy, self-assured man and stay at home, watching her own children grow up. What authors of historical fiction have to understand is that they can only put that many modern ideas about emancipation and political correctness into their stories without ruining the experience for their readers. This novel is a perfect example of this: The hero is an illegitimate son without any self-esteem who has devoted his life to freeing women from unhappy marriages, the heroine is a bossy shrew with an aversion to „breeding“. I found it rather strenuous to follow them from the start and when she actually told him off in front of a crowded ballroom for trying to defend her honour by calling another man out (in a fit of toxic masculinity?) and he then actually slinked after her to the garden to apologise, I lost my respect for both of them so completely that I stopped listening.
But if you are more modern minded than me, this might still be a great read for you.
