Four late philosophical tales by Voltaire, written at his estate at Ferney when he was the most famous and feared writer in Europe. In The Naive One, a young Huron raised among the Native peoples of North America arrives in Lower Brittany, discovers that he has French relatives, and falls in love with the beautiful Saint-Yves. His frank good sense collides with the church, the court at Versailles and the Bastille, in a tale that turns from comedy to heartbreak.
In The Man with Forty Crowns, an ordinary citizen living on a modest income tries to make sense of the taxes, economic theories and learned quarrels of his day. In The Princess of Babylon, the beautiful Formosante pursues her beloved Amazan across the kingdoms of the world, a fantastic journey that becomes a satirical tour of Europe. And in The Story of Jenni, a young Englishman's adventures lead to a long debate between a believer and an atheist about God and morality.
Witty, humane and still sharp after two and a half centuries, these tales show Voltaire's campaign for tolerance and reason at its most assured. This new translation presents the complete tales, read in full.
