the novel is astonishingly close in style and structure to the handmaid's tale, considering the two writings are thirty year apart, but uses that familiarity with brilliance to depict a completely different era in that world. the same documentary feel and uniquely female perspective makes for a frighteningly realistic immersion. and the amazing performer have no small part of it so the audio book is well worth getting to experience this. one is left with the uncanny feeling, that not only COULD it happen here (that in itself being a somewhat nebulous description of the western 'civilised' strata, because there are where's in which it IS happening) but maybe that only this imaging as a warning of a possible dystopian future like that is standing between us and going down that path. if so, more literary warning are very much in order. but this is without a doubt a novelistic master class by Margaret Atwood.

This is a very good book! And it works especially good as an audiobook, I think, because the different voices add to the characterisation if the protagonists.

How many times did Margaret Atwood need to write loose lips sink ships? These wierd one-liners did not feel like Atwood at all.

The story on a whole was entertaining. BUT...Some of the dialogues were very weak and it became a little annoying towards the end.

The story felt forced in some places

Selten habe ich so gern ein Hörbuch gehört. Die englische Ausgabe brilliert durchbohre fantastischen Sprecherinnen. Die Geschichte verdichtet sich immer mehr, so dass ich zum Schluss nicht mehr aufhören konnte zuzuhören. Die Charaktere entwickeln sich von anfänglichen Stereotypen zu komplexen Figuren. Ein Buch, das ich als Hörbuch uneingeschränkt weiterempfehlen kann.

...wie “The Handmaid’s Tale“ und eine unheimlich spannende Erzählung mit wirklich exzellenten Sprecherinnen!
Obwohl es sich ja bei Gilead um einen fiktiven Staat handelt, mutet die Geschichte des Niedergangs sehr authentisch an. Man kann sich als Hörer einer Gänsehaut nicht erwehren, so echt wirken die „Zeugenaussagen“ der Beteiligten.

Das erste Buch hat mich schon in seinen Bann geschlagen, aber dieses Folgewerk von Margaret Atwood ist fast noch besser - eine absolute Hörempfehlung!
Hier stimmt einfach alles, die Story, die Sprecher und die Kunst, im Hörer einen Nachklang zu hinterlassen.
Für mich eines der besten Hörbücher überhaupt.

It‘s been a long time I read/ heard such an amazing book. It is even better than the first one of the series. So sad it is already over - I hope there will be another part in the future. Can recommend this book 1000%, we finally get answers what happened.
