Über diesen Titel

Welcome to The Sunbearer Trials, where ten semidioses compete in a series of challenges with the highest of stakes, in this breathtaking, Mexican-inspired fantasy from Aiden Thomas, the author of the bestselling Cemetery Boys.

Only the most powerful and honorable will be chosen.

Teo, the seventeen-year-old trans son of the goddess of birds, isn’t worried. As a Jade, it’s unlikely he’ll be chosen to compete in the Trials, and even if his best friend Niya competes, she’s a born-and-bred Gold semidiós with unparalleled abilities.

But for the first time in over a century, two Jade competitors are chosen: Teo – and Xio, the thirteen-year-old child of the god of bad luck. With the odds stacked against them, Teo is determined to get himself and his friends through the trials unscathed – for fame, glory, and their own survival . . .

'Charming queer characters, thrilling magical trials, and an immersive fantasy world full of intricate details' – Xiran Jay Zhao, author of Iron Widow

Splendid storytelling. The Sunbearer Trials dazzles with adventure, breathing life into a bustling fantastical world filled with both wonders and evils. Aiden Thomas is a brilliant talent (Chloe Gong, author of These Violent Delights)
Aiden Thomas fully knocked me out with The Sunbearer Trials, delivering charming queer characters, thrilling magical trials, and an immersive fantasy world full of intricate details. This book is a triumph and I could not get enough! (Xiran Jay Zhao, New York Times–bestselling author of Iron Widow)
One of the best fantasy novels I have ever read. Aiden Thomas is masterful in their ability to not only build such a brilliant world but also characters who you love and want to root for. The Sunbearer Trials is a force to be reckoned with and has completely changed the game. (Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé, New York Times-bestselling author of Ace of Spades)

The description of "Percy Jackson meets hunger games" fits exactly. Lots of Mexican God's and aztec mythology? (I'm sorry if i misplaced the region, I don't know anything about that. Learnt lots of new foreign words, though!)

The games are interesting as well as the story. Great pacing.

First time to read a Trans-Main character story and I really loved his portrayal. The story is not overbearing on the topic of dysphoria. Different identities are a very accepted and normal thing in the story/world which I love reading! (Listening to cemetery boys next)

Romance factor is very slow but blooming like a delicate flower! Looking forward to more of that on the horizon!;)

Pro-tip: you can find ART of the characters under Aiden Thomas' website!

Interesting story

A lil queer love-child of Hunger Games and Percy Jackson with a lot of very progressive elements that focus on visibility (for different disabilities, poc, and of course queerness), which also didn't seem over the top or forced to me most of the time (except for this one time where the a panther's black fur was described as "melinated" which is... a choice.) It definitely heavily leans on its world-building for a lot of the interest but mostly I didn't mind that since it is pretty intricate and has a lot interesting new ideas and a different non-western perspective, that I really enjoyed.
Though I personally was a little let down over all and somewhat frustrated at times, especially with the voice/style of writing and character-depth but that's really a part of it's genre and just me being a little annoyed with the lack of non-YA queer fantasy.
I was also pretty dissatisfied the narrorator at times. I find that he put too much emotion in/empethised far too many sentences that actually were purely descriptive/neutral in tone which made many moments seem melodramatic and far too whimsical than what they warranted.

But all these aside if you're only looking for a cute, queer (modern) fantasy YA this definitely is the read for you.

Cute for what it is
