MacLeod's tale shows convincingly that no one individual or country is immune from totalitarianism, and the identity of his British dictator forms a twist that, both beguilingly and deceptively, never stops turning.

Ein alternder, schwuler Oxford-Don erfährt, das er bald an unheilbarem Lungenkrebs sterben wird. Das alles in einem England des Jahres 1940, das von einem faschistischen Regime beherrscht wird. Der Held ekelt sich: an seiner Krankheit, seiner Umwelt, seiner eigenen Geschichte und seiner Homosexualität. Nach zwei Stunden ekelt sich auch dieser Zuhörer und dreht ab!

Dabei ist dem Buch Qualität nicht abzusprechen, das Buch erinnert bisweilen an Orwells "1984" und der Erzähler Steve Hodson bietet eine großartige Vorstellung. Trotzdem: zuviel des Ekels.
