Some say that things and places have souls. The Street was born with the colony itself: a quiet path of oaks and wells, walked by settlers, by soldiers marching to war, by generations of children who grew old in its houses.
But centuries pass. The old families leave, the elms are cut down, the houses sag into slums, and strange voices fill the doorways. Then, in the fevered summer of 1919, a plot takes shape behind one of those crumbling facades. And on a still night, the Street itself answers.
Written during the Red Scare, The Street is one of H.P. Lovecraft's most revealing and most controversial early works. Less a horror tale than a nativist allegory, it lays bare the fears of its author and his era, and it stands today as an unsettling historical document by one of weird fiction's founding voices.
Listen to the complete, unabridged audiobook of this rarely heard story by H.P. Lovecraft.
