Luis Soto dazzles in his performance of this marvelous work by one of the best storytellers of all time, Georgette Heyer. Here the passionate and impulsive soldier Harry meets the equally passionate very young Juanita after an horrific battle and their souls become entwined. The young Spanish Bride joins her husband through battles and grueling forced marches, mud huts, death, hunger, cold, thirst fear and an often comical ability to cope through it all. Luis Soto’s performance is simply grandiose as he flits from accent to accent with perfection and ease, his expressions so defined that there is never a doubt who is speaking. This is an epic romance in marvelous historical not-quite-fiction. Fabulous.

Die Geschichte ist mehr etwas für Geschichtsinterressierte, weil sie Wellingtons Feldzüge sehr anschaulich und mitfühlbar beschreibt. Aber auch die Protagonisten haben ihren Charme.

Als Georgette Heyer Fan habe ich eine spannende, nachvollziehbare Geschichte erwartet. Diese Geschichte ist enttäuschend, weil sie dem Leser nicht mit den Hauptfiguren einfängt und es passiert nichts, was wirklich spannend ist.

Der Sprecher versucht die verschiedenen Tonlagen und Akzente der Charakteren darzustellen. Mich wundert es, dass er Juana einem Spanischen Akzent verpasst, wenn sie angeblich nur im Spanisch spricht. Georgette Heyer hat sie in einer schlechten Grammatik sprechen lassen. Das macht kein Sinn, es sei denn, sie würde in der Fremdsprachen Englisch und Französisch sprechen.

Zum Einschlafen ist es ok, aber Heyer hat bessere Romane geschrieben.
