Ich fand es super interessant wie stark die einzelnen Persönlichkeiten und Vorurteile der Protagonisten zur Katastrophe beigetragen haben.
Außerdem kann man Z.B. auf dem Balkan auch heute noch die Folgen sehen, bzw Haltungen wiederfinden.

The chap who reads the book does not have the least competence in pronouncing the names of involved german and austrian politicians and cities. Very annoying for a book that intents to shed light on the events that lead to WW1. One would like to think that there must have been a better choice available. Was that guy the cheapest choice?

The narrator is not even competent in the very basics of German language

The book itself is very well structured, concise and interestingly written. The narration, though, leaves much to be desired. Tonal jumps in the middle of sentences or sentences read as finished halfway through, pronunciation of European names sometimes good enough, other times totally inadequate. I enjoyed the relaxed tone of the narration, though sometimes it sounded as if the narrator had a bit of a hay fever.

Ich bin Deutsche und habe mich als Heranwachsende immer gefragt, warum Deutschland „an allem Schuld ist“. Dies war für mich keine nationalistisch geprägte Frage, sondern tatsächlich eine Verständnisfrage. Nun muss ich allerdings auch gestehen, dass der Geschichtsunterricht nicht unbedingt zu meinen Lieblingen während der Schulzeit gehörte. Christopher Clark schafft es in seinem Werk, die Komplexität der Geschehnisse so darzustellen, dass man sie nachvollziehen kann und weiterhören möchte. Er schafft die Balance zwischen dröger Sachdarstellung und faszinierender Romanerzählung - ohne dabei von Fakten abzuweichen.
Ich habe das Buch im Sommer 22 gehört. Europa hat wieder einen Krieg, die Auswirkungen spüren wir alle.
Bei den Gebrüdern Grimm findet man das Zitat: „Niemals wiederholt sich die Geschichte, sondern sie ist überall neu und frisch, unaufhörlich wiederholt sich die Sage.“
Dieses Zitat ist sicherlich in einem anderen Kontext entstanden, dennoch kann dieses Werk auch als Warnung angesehen werden, Fehler nicht zu wiederholen.
Es ist insgesamt herausragend und macht nachdenklich - über internationale Beziehungen und Abhängigkeiten, politische Strategien und die Wesenszüge der eigenen Identität.

Powerful analysis of the reasons leading to the outbreak of WW1

Historisch ausgezeichnet, interessante Thesen, die vielleicht manchmal etwas gar zu milde gegenüber der deutschen Außenpolitik wirken. Der große Schwachpnkt ist der Sprecher. Die Marokkokonferenz fand in Algeciras, nicht "Algericas" statt, es tagte der Reichstag, nicht der "Reich-Schtag", und der französische Außenminister hieß Delcassé, nicht "Declassé" (besonders peinlich!). Warum sucht man sich für ein solches Buch Sprecher, die keine Fremdsprachen beherrschen?
