When their father dies, Star D'Aplièse and her six sisters, all adopted by him from the four corners of the world, are left with few clues to their heritage. But Star - the most enigmatic of the sisters - is hesitant to step out of the safety of the close relationship she shares with her sister CeCe. In desperation, she decides to follow her first clue, which leads her to an antiquarian bookshop in London, and the start of a whole new world....

Great book, underwhelming narrator

Having read the first two instalments of this series in the German translation, I was really looking forward to listening to this sequel in the original.
I loved the content. It kept me glued to my earphones despite the really underwhelming narration. It's a great story, transporting us back to Edwardian times. Most of the characters were positively lovable, but of course there were some 'bad' ones among them. The story was interesting, the characters fascinating, the connection between then and now really well made, as was the denouement. So, I'd absolutely recommend READING this book, but I can't recommend to LISTEN to it.

The narrator didn't have any range of voice, so males and females all sounded alike. She tried to make up for this lack by giving terrible fake accents to the sisters. For heaven's sake, it is even spelled out that the sisters were raised bilingual -- English and French -- from the cradle, AND they had lived in England for several years by now. Maybe it would have helped if the accent would at least have sounded French -- alas, it sounded Russian at times, and undefinable at other times. And as if this wasn't bad enough, the narrator had the deaf boy shout his sign language, which hurt my ears.

Of all the many books I've listened to, this is the first time I'm writing a negative review about the narration, but I feel that I should warn potential listeners.

Unnecessary French accent

Although I enjoy Lucinda Rileys stories of the seven sisters of the pleiades, I really don’t understand why they are read with a French accent. In each of the books it is mentioned that Pa Salt put focus on raising the girls bilingual, making sure they were fluent in both English and French. Ma spoke French with them, Pa Salt English.
I am capable of understanding both languages and still have a very hard time und have to rewind some parts of the book to fully understand the words spoken on behalf of the seven sisters. I don’t think that this is what Pa Salt intended and neither did Lucinda Riley.

Great book, reader not fitting to Star

I loved this book of the series, especially the use of the language, which is somewhat more complex than the first two books (fitting the personality of Star, her English literature studies and the historic background of the book). After a couple of pages, I switched to the Kindle book though. It‘s certainly a good audiobook reader, but two things irritated me a lot:
- the speed of the reading: this quick reading just does not fit Star‘s personality, an introverted, silent, modest, shy, peaceful young woman. I used slowdowning and listened the book at 75% speed and it was better.
- the French accent. Horrible! Why would Star and Cece speak English with a French accent? Star studied English Literature in Sussex, traveled the world, lives in London, and as it is mentionned in the book, was bilingual (quote from the book: „All of us girls were bilingual, speaking French and English from the cradle at Pa’s insistence, and we only spoke English to Claudia.“). I found the accent very disturbing and the listener can be happy that Star does not speak much! In the first book, the French accent was used only when the French sculptor in Paris was speaking and this fitted wonderfully. Imagine all the characters in the first book would have had Brazilian or Italian accents...
Conclusion: Buy the book, not the audio book !

The voice of star

I really loved the first 2 books and so far this one is good just it’s very confusing that the first 2 sisters all had the same voice as the narrator.. but for some reason on here Star has a French accent but the narrator has a perfect English.

I might have to go back to chapter 1 or 2 to listen again because I am pretty sure she was narrating and speaking in the same accent!
That’s the only thing that confused me.
When I started this chapter I was very confused because I really thought Star was reading a Story like the other 2 sisters.
