On Sunday, February 3rd 1990, seven-year-old Danny Redpath disappeared from his home. Four months later, his body was found in the nearby forest, washed clean of all evidence. Over time, more bodies were discovered; more families devastated forever.

Apprehended while attempting to abduct another child, Jonathan Egan-Walsh was charged with the murders of thirteen boys. Convicted on all counts, he received life in prison and went unrepentant, still refusing to reveal the whereabouts of one of his victims, Zachery Marshall.

Twenty-five years later, Zachery’s mother Diane is still searching for his body. When Jonathan dies in custody, she realises she will never know its location – until she receives a letter he left in his cell, in which he admits he was guilty of all the crimes of which he was accused, except the murder of her son.

Diane tracks down the woman in charge of the case at the time, former DI Caroline Turner, and together with Jonathan’s biographer Alex Frost they start to investigate. Could this be the killer’s final twist of the knife – or is he telling the truth at long last? Sooner or later, this secret buried and undisturbed for a quarter of a century will come to light.

For those, who, like me, hesitate after reading the review mentioning the distracting lisp:

Listening to audiobooks, what I perceive as odd or 'off' in someone's voice(s) or pronunciation, can get on my nerves.

Here, however, the lisp isn't bad at all, after a short while, I barely noticed it (and only now and then). Otherwise, the reading is great, pleasant, natural, with a real, local feel.

I liked it a lot. I am very glad this was offered as 'Enthalten im Abo', I might have discovered a 'new' (for me) author this way.

The book held my interest and I thought it a well-researched and well-written crime story which focuses more on the victims such crimes leave behind than merely looking at a shocking killer and dedicating long paragraphs to detailed descriptions of torture, rape and murder.

This got me hooked right from the start and never let go. It's well plotted, pleasingly slow paced (taking time to build up atmosphere and characters) - and hard to put down. To my great horror I found myself actually enjoying and looling forward to the serial killer's revelations while being repulsed by them at the same time.

The narrator's voice seemed vaguely familiar, then I checked and saw it's Joanne Frogatt from Dowton Abbey. She's done an awesome job on this one!!! I didn't hear no lisp, but the light accent, warmth and intensity of her voice made this story truly come alive for me and deeply touched my heart.
Thrilling, chilling, and yet strangely satisfying.

I enjoyed the style of writing. it was more relaxing to listen to than many of the books I have recently heard. I had time to consider and think about what the outcome would be, which I like to do and I was surprised how it ended. Well read. Thumbs up from me.

I really liked the story and the performances. I was looking forward to continuing with the audiobook whenever I had to stop! 5 stars!!!

Die Sprecherin ist etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig. aber dann kommt man gut klar.
Die Geschichte hat verschiedene Spannungsbögen.
Konnte kaum zwischen durch aufhören.

Main reader: A bit monotone, she doesn't attempt various accents, I could not tell the different characters appart.
Story:
Overall boring and disappointing. The topic is very sad. There was not one interesting character.
Language:
O.k. but quite generic and repetitive. Most repeated quotes"I don't know what to think" The wind was cold,freezing, of low temperature etcetera."
Overall verdict:
Avoid..... This is the worst book I ever finished listening to......

Unfortunately I had to quit listening to this book because the speaker’s voice and her lisp were incredibly distracting .

Initially I was disappointed with the story concept however, as the characters were developed it became more interesting. Although some of the character traits seemed to change for no apparent reason (unkempt and tired to fit and smart). And unfortunately, for me, the perpetrator was fairly obvious if you read a lot of crime drama.
Overall the story was well performed and made interesting listening while covering motorway miles.
