From the heights of Calvary, the twentieth century’s greatest spiritual broadcaster unveils the transformative power of divine love and redemption.
In The Seven Last Words, the Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen turns his brilliant theological mind and poetic eloquence toward the pivotal moment of human history: the Crucifixion. Before the advent of his Emmy-winning television broadcasts, Sheen’s celebrated Good Friday meditations drew thousands to St. Patrick’s Cathedral, establishing him as one of the most compelling voices in modern Christian thought. In this masterwork of spiritual reflection, he examines the final utterances of Jesus Christ not as passive cries of agony, but as deliberate decrees of divine purpose.
Each chapter explores one of the seven phrases spoken from the Cross, drawing profound parallels between Christ’s suffering and the universal struggles of humanity. Sheen guides the reader through the depths of forgiveness, the promise of paradise, filial devotion, spiritual thirst, and the ultimate surrender to the Father’s will. With characteristic clarity, he demonstrates how these ancient words speak directly to contemporary anxieties, offering a timeless blueprint for Christian living.
Rather than presenting an academic treatise, Sheen crafts an intimate meditation on the cost of discipleship and the reality of grace. He challenges the reader to look beyond surface piety, revealing that the Cross is both a mirror reflecting human brokenness and an altar of absolute reconciliation.
Decades after its original composition, The Seven Last Words remains an indispensable companion for the Lenten season and a perennial classic of spiritual literature. Whether approached for personal devotion, theological enrichment, or quiet contemplation, Sheen’s profound insights invite believers and seekers alike to encounter the profound mystery of the Passion anew.
