From one of the foremost historians of the period and the acclaimed author of Inferno and Catastrophe: 1914, The Secret War is a sweeping examination of one of the most important yet underexplored aspects of World War II—intelligence—showing how espionage successes and failures by the United States, Britain, Russia, Germany, and Japan influenced the course of the war and its final outcome.

Spies, codes, and guerrillas played unprecedentedly critical roles in the Second World War, exploited by every nation in the struggle to gain secret knowledge of its foes, and to sow havoc behind the fronts. In The Secret War, Max Hastings presents a worldwide cast of characters and some extraordinary sagas of intelligence and resistance, to create a new perspective on the greatest conflict in history.

great overview of ww2 SIGINT and spying, shame Hastings can't resist shoehorning his instinctive disdain for the western allies ability to fight and his general fawning over the Wehrmacht into the narrative.

i trust his research, but not his conclusions.

typical, rather than vintage Hastings

I enjoyed listening to this comprehensive story about both the institutions and the individuals that were involved in the secret war. The author makes it easy to follow some of the individual's biographies, how they got involved, and how they were partly deceived and betrayed by their "own" agencies. I also cherished his critical view about the outcomes of these efforts on the battlefield and their - very diverse - effects on informed strategic decision-making.
However, the speaker struggled with even the most common non-Anglo-Saxon names, words and abbreviations, which was quite distractive, every time it came to German or French terms.

Great story, surprising biographies
