Great story and amazing narrator

The Schopenhauer Cure is a wonderful story exploring the interesting intersection of psychology and philosophy. I have highly enjoyed Yalom's 'Nietzsche wept' and 'Spinozas Problem' and 'The Schopenhauer Cure sis not disappoint'. I would highly recommend this audio book!

Yalom's books are of great value for everyone portraying in an easy, yet thrilling and powerfully written way psychodynamic conflict, process and healing. Highly Recommended.

Große Empfehlung

Sexism, misogyny, and problematic sexual behavior

This book definitely needs a TW for sexually abusive behavior in a whole variety of shapes and forms, even to the point of a fairly graphic description of childhood SA (for which the character reporting this is dismissed in a shocking manner in my opinion).

The beginning was too dragged out for my taste but once the therapy started, it got much better.

The speaker took some getting used to but grew on me over time.

I did find the group therapy sessions quite enjoyable for the most part, the dynamic of the members and how they help each other see their blind spots was portrayed quite well and kept me hooked.

Definitely could have done without the Schopenhauer biography dispersed throughout the book (almost every second chapter). I found that incredibly boring and I didn't really get the point of it. Schophenhauer seems to have been a pretty sexist and misogynistic asshole.

I disliked the fact that his sexism and misogyny were reproduced without challenging them. Some hints of sexism in the therapy sessions as well. Also, the R-slur.

Moreover, I personally don't subscribe to forcing a victim of sexual coercion by massive power imbalance to be in touch with her perpetrator against her will and forgive him as a means for healing. This narrative feels icky to me.

Also: sex with a severely intoxicated person can never be consensual! Didn't like how this was glossed over.

Oh and one more thing: not everyone is motivated by sex and sex alone as Schopenhauer claims - asexual people exist and they are valid!

Overall, I would say I didn't find it to be a great book but also not bad. A passable way to pass the time.

Great book, bad narration

Love the story, very inspiring and interesting, historically and psychologically.
The narration was not good. He has often the same style for all speakers, very hard to tell who is talking.... too harsh in his speech

A class in Philosophy

I loved how Irvin Yalom wrote the therapistslnand leader off group therapys character. How he encouraged the participents in the group to talk about their own feels, Schupenhauer and his philosophy was new to me . Well writen and easy for me an non academic to understand

Easy to underestimate

This is a great book that in addition to the main story line dives into many different side stories that are all connected and climax in the end when everything comes together.

In my opinion this book is way underrated but the reader must be willing to go through at least half of the book before its brilliance begins to shine through and then it just gets better and better. I was truly sad when the book reached its foretold from the start and irreversible ending. Very emotional book yet at the same time objective-analytical if that makes any sense.

Also, my sincere compliments to the reader - you did an outstanding job and made this book an absolute pleasure to listen to.

Overall 5 out of 5 stars and my personal "must read" recommendation seal!

Valuable lessons for psychotherapists

Perhaps I would have given 5 stars, hadn’t I listened to “When Nietzsche Wept” first which for me was a most memorable experience.
