The first in the Night's Dawn trilogy, The Reality Dysfunction is a sweeping, intergalactic adventure from the master of space opera, Peter F. Hamilton. For fans of Iain M. Banks and Alastair Reynolds.

An extinct race named this phenomenon 'the Reality Dysfunction'. It is a nightmare that has haunted us since the dawn of time . . .

In AD 2600, the human race is finally realizing its potential. The galaxy’s colonized planets host a multitude of diverse cultures. Genetic engineering has defeated disease and produced extraordinary space-born creatures. Huge fleets of sentient trader starships thrive, living on the wealth created by industrializing entire star systems. And throughout inhabited space, the Confederation Navy keeps the peace.

Then something goes catastrophically wrong. On a primitive colony planet, a renegade criminal encounters an utterly alien entity. And this unintended meeting triggers the release of those that should never see the light – threatening everything we’ve become . . .

Absolute vintage science-fiction. Hamilton puts British sci-fi back into interstellar overdrive
An epic in the traditional sense of the word . . . thunderously enjoyable

I read the trilogy when it came out, so it's quite a while ago. I remember the story being long winded with sometimes slightly too much descriptions, but overall it was lots of fun. Nearly 20 years later, enters the audio book. I had heard good things about John Lee, so I was taken aback by his weird intonation, pathos and the way he seemed to introduce punctuation where it didn't make sense. The book contrasts between two different cultural groups, the edenists (heavy genetic engineering and bio-tech using atheistic aristocrats) and the adamists (religion bound with a much less accepting view of biotech and gen engineering), and the story starts off arts with a lengthy passage about "Edenists" and the birth of bio-engineered spaceship. It seems like John Lee decided to add the pathos and heavy "modulation" to parts purtaining to edenists, which means that is what the listener gets for the first hour or so. The next parts are NOT about edenists and there John Lee shows off his talent, with some great characters and an always very understandable pronounciation (along with his endearing accent full of rolling R's). Sadly this means a third or so of the book is barely listenable and cringe inducing for me, so I can only give him 3 stars.

Questionable choices by John Lee

It's very annoying that there are no pauses between the chapters. You constantly find yourself puzzled by the strange twists in the events, which actually aren't twists at all, and have to rewind to properly follow the plot.
The story contains many original ideas.

4,5 out of 5 stars!!!
The only minus is for me the lack auf pauses between chapters and/or logical pauses.

Slow start, but at the end VERY breathtaking!!!

John Lee over pronounces every single sentence. He sound like reading poetry. I had to stop listening to this very good book.

Weird pronunciation! Cannot listen to it.
