Quality of the book improved again

Furtunately E. George started to focus more on the crime/detective elements of the story. Going back to this is a big improvement from the previous books.

Endlich wieder ein Lynley-Havers Fall

obwohl an manchen Stellen zu viele (unwichtige) Details den Wunsch entstehen lassen, diese zu überspringen, ist es doch ein Lynley-Havers-Fall nach altem und geliebtem Muster. Ein grosses Kompliment an die Sprecherin, die versucht hat, jederm Charakter eine eigene Stimmfarbe zu geben. Ein paar Stimmen waren allerdings zu übertrieben und daher nicht lange anhörbar (die Stimmen der Frauen zum Teil). Deborah Harriman klang wie ein kleines Mädchen. Daher "nur" 4 Sterne für die Sprecherin.

I don't usually do this...

but there's a choice involved and I want to help you with it. But first things first: I've been reading Elizabeth George's murder mysteries for many, many years and though it was always worth my time I'd never have believed that an author can just get better and better over such a span oft time. And I'm the happier for choosing the audio over the read this once. Now should I get the male voice or the female? I liked both on first listen but there were two points that carried my decision: The first one is that J. Barrie takes 6 hours of additional time for the read which does seem such a bargain in itself. The other is that, while women can mostly do male voices without sounding awkward, the same can rarely be said about a man giving voice to a female character (check the Murakami audios). There are exceptions (like everybody's favorite Doctor) and as a rule gay men usually don't show the problem. Anyway I picked the female voice. And while I saw Julie Andrews (like in Victor/Victoria) when Inspector Linley talked, everybody else was just who they were. Including the male characters, but oh, the women! Was there ever a story that was carried by such a range of different female personalities clashing in every thinkable way? And was there ever one brought to life better than is the case in this rendition? If I thought that there's a level of drama only a movie can convey, I do know better now. I laughed out loud occasionally but I cried more, and often I did both at the same time. My greatest respect for the two women who collaborated to bring this piece of art to me. I'm a man btw. :)

extraordinarily satisfying

The narrator was excellent. I loved how she managed to do all the regional accents including the Herefordian one.
The story was so satisfying and a real pleasure to follow.

brilliant, enthusiastic narrating, great novel

a great novel with an very good story. great characters and narrated with great expertise and talent for voices and moodes. sometimes a bit shrill in the ears. wonderful new developments in our favourite characters and a glimpse of hope that Barbara will have a love life too on time.

Unerträgliche Sprecherin

Die Geschichte entwickelt sich sehr, sehr langsam. Wer so wie ich die Charaktere nicht aus vorhergegangenen Büchern kennt, ist wohl rasch gelangweilt. Die Charaktere wirken flach und stereotyp. Am mühsamsten ist aber die Sprecherin der englischen Ausgabe. Sie schafft es mit ihrer hohen Simme, dass ich innerhalb von 5 Minuten mit der Aufmerksamkeit abdrifte. Insgesamt also keine Empfehlung für dieses Hörbuch.
