How remarkable that an Italian living in the 15th and 16th centuries should lend his name to a word still in common usage in the English language today. Nicolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) wrote only one major work as a gift for his ruling Prince, Lorenzo de Medici. Machiavelli held office as a senior civil servant for 14 years until the downfall of the Republic in 1512. No longer officially employed to impart advice, instead Machiavelli poured out his ideas and resentment in his writings. The Prince as remained a prominent classic ever since; valued for its shrewd psychological insight, powerful words, and prophetic quality. And even today, it has never lost its power to shock and influence. Ian Richardson's formidable reading of this modern unabridged translation is an accessible and entertaining way in to a truly compelling world view.Public Domain © and (P)2005 CSA Telltapes Ltd Politik & Regierungen

Machiavelli's classic text still holds relevance today and goes beyond how a prince may rule his principalities. It has insights in conflict resolution and religious matters, is a great historical document of 15th and 16th century Italy while simultanerously being very entertaining. There are numerous narrators available for this book, but I can absolutely recommend Ian Richardson, whose polished British English fits perfectly to the image of a somewhat dubious counselor whispering into a royal's ears.

I feel the urge to do some political scheming!

Wonderfully read by Francis Urquhart (Ian Richardson) giving it the certain solemnness and magesty of voice and pronunciation that inevitably is required in order to fully regard and experience this work of world literature. Seldom a work has left a greater mark upon civilisation and cultural thinking, and even more seldom has a work so short of volume left a mark as great or lasting. Half a millennium has elapsed since this short work of about a hundred pages only has began its way throughout history and with Ian Richardson's interpretaion this depth of history and significance is honored in due terms.
I can give without any reservation my best recommendation for this audiobook to anyone who is either interested in the author or the narrator or the content of the work itself.
To use an adapted quote: May your illustrious house be the next to seize the opportunity and the chances that fate or luck has put on you by rendering this work into your mind.

PS: the audio-quality is pretty good (much bettern than given in the example) if one downloads it with 'high quality'

Magnificent
