YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHY YOU KEEP GETTING STUCK. KNOWING HASN'T CHANGED ANYTHING. You've done the therapy. Read the books. Tried meditation, journaling, and the apps. Some of it helped. And still, when the pressure is real, you return to the same reactions. You replay conversations long after they end. You say yes when you mean no. You push through exhaustion, take responsibility for how everyone else feels, and keep reaching for the next accomplishment, hoping it will finally allow you to relax. This is the Performance Trap. We do not perform only because we want to succeed. Somewhere along the way, performance became how we learned to feel safe, wanted, valued, and allowed to belong. Performance is not only achievement. It can look like people-pleasing, perfectionism, usefulness, self-control, or never needing too much. These adaptations can carry us far. They can also ask us to override the exhaustion, the rage, the longing, the tenderness, and the no we cannot quite say. Over time, that override becomes an ache. Often, we finally notice it after getting the thing we thought would make us feel like we were enough, only to discover the ache is still there. Part memoir and part guide, The Performance Trap traces my own path into this pattern, from my brother's death to the burnout years when my health broke while my practice was thriving, and offers body-based practices for turning toward the ache beneath it. The pattern is older and faster than thought. It lives in the body, so that is where the work begins. The ache is not the flaw. It is the way back to yourself.©2026 Chad Herst (P)2026 Chad Herst Grief & Loss Personal Development Personal Success Relationships Stress Management
