It took me almost the whole book to get used to the writing style of Justin Cronin. There are so many side stories, of which I thought they are totally unnecessary. But when you get deeper into the story, you'll see that you need these. And in the l as get books, you'll love it.
When I got used to the style or rather when I understood his style, you cannot not love it. It is so wonderfully written, the story is so unique, there are so many twists, different components. It is wonderful, just wonderful.

Scott Brick does a wonderful job in reading the story as well. His voice is very nice to listen to, his reading is very smooth.

This book gripped me from the start and I was totally immersed in the story.
Few books have grabbed my attention so fully and I would recommend anyone to read or listen to this one of the most amazing stories I've ever listened to!

Das erste Buch dieser Trilogie ist eine gelungene Mischung aus Vampier Story, Endzeit Epos und Science Fiction.

Wie hat der Erzähler das Buch beeinflusst?

Der Erzähler ist einfach eine Katastrophe und ließt die ganze Zeit mit einer schwermütigen Stimme, das einzige Manko an der englischen Version dieses tollen Buches.

Eine gelungene Mischung

Eine wirklich unglaublich gut geschriebene Story auf hohen Niveau, die all denen gefallen wird, die gerne über die Auflösung (u. Wiederauferstehung) der Welt, wie wir sie kennen, lesen u. dabei nicht auf bis ins letzte Detail beschriebene Charaktere u. Details verzichten wollen.

Die Story umreisst ein sehr lange Zeit, beginnend vor Ausbruch des Virus, das die Menschheit (fast) vernichtet, bzw. in Mutanten verwandelt, bis hin zu den wenigen Überlebenden in Nordamerika 100 Jahre danach, die in einfachen Verhältnissen leben, bis hin zu deren Nachkommen, die in die Südsee geflüchtet sind, über 1000 Jahre später.

Das (Über-) Leben dieser Menschen wird sehr genau beschrieben u. auch das der mutierten Menschen, Virals genannt, wird beleuchtet, ebenso wie die Entstehung des Virus selbst.

Über allem steht Amy, das Mädchen aus dem Nirgendwo, die, die 1000 Jahre lebt, mit den Tieren spricht u. durchgängig eine tragende Rolle in dieser fantastischen Dystopie spielt.

Ich habe die Amerikanische Version, gelesen von Scott Brick, gehört u. war begeistert.

Einfach fantastischer Endzeitroman

I am glad, my friend recommendet the english version since the german one has 12hrs only. With gliding into this story the suspence rouse more and more, every time I thought OK now all are at an end the story went on getting more thrilling. I really liked this book. The english speaker was not my cup of tea :-) but ok. He was a bit pompous which this story did not need. But ok ... all in all a very satisfying story which sorry to say was a bit scary also with it's "maybe' s and might be' s" considering what the world we live in is going through right now.

So much Suspence

Nachdem die deutsche Version gekürzt ist, habe ich die englische gehört und habe es nicht bereut.
Wenn man halbwegs gut Englisch kann kommt man gut rein, weil es wirklich sehr gut gelesen ist. Ein paar Vokabel habe ich nachgeschlagen und mir gemerkt, ...auch kein Schaden.
Die Geschichte ist toll und ich mag nicht nur SF, Fantasy und schon gar keine Vampirgeschichten!

Tolles Hörbuch, sehr gut gelesen!

Trotz der Länge bleibt es immer spannend! Eine packende Geschichte! Stellenweise leiert der Sprecher etwas, aber das ist zu verkraften. Freue mich schon darauf den nächsten Teil anzuhören!

I think I have never had a book more times in my hands than this one. It always found me no matter if I was at a train station or at a local bookstore it was just there and it wanted to be read. I finally gave in and started listening to it.

THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS:


Initially I was confused. Every chapter is written from a different point of view but it's interesting nonetheless. Especially Amy warmed my heart and the connection she has to Wolgast who became a somewhat father substitute was relatable and heartwarming. This made the first quarter of the book worth reading.

From there on I was just bored out of my mind and I don't even know why. Justin Cronin proved in the first part of the story that he is able to write a good story and characters that you can relate to. But this? I couldn't care less about the colonists. Every chapter I was hoping those damn virals would finally destroy this camp but noooo...

Luckily Amy showed up again and then it was an up and down for me.

It wasn't a bad book but it could have been cut down a bit.

At this point I'm not sure if I will continue with this series.

Ich habe keine Probleme mit Englisch, der Sprecher ist wunderbar zu verstehen.
Das rettet den Inhalt jedoch nicht. Unendlich langgezogene, verschwurbelte Vampirgeschichte ohne Sinn und Ziel. Überemotional. Für mich unerträglich.
