I enjoyed parts of the story, especially the episodes about Elle's childhood summers. The backstory on the other hand is told in too much detail and many chapters about Elle's early childhood are just irrelevant to the story as a whole (grandparents, stepmothers etc.) The author should have focused more on Elle and Jonas's story, shortening at least some of the lengthy passages. Some characters, like Elle's mother or Gina for example, never really come to life for me. On the whole, reading/listening to so many pages is not worth the time - especially considering the very predictable ending.

Just too long, too many irrelevant chapters...

Good read, but poor ending

The content (rape, sexuell assault...) was quite disturbing for me. Expected something different. Certainly not my kind of book, overall I thought it was boring next to the disturbing.

"The Paper Palace" is an entertaining and gripping story, for sure. It doesn´t bore, and the jumps in time and place are well timed, so that the reader unravels the backstory in a large circle starting from the present day and ending there again, having gone on a journey in time along with the protagonist.

The story itself is not very original, although some characters (the husband, the mother, the sister) are well-developed and really jump off the page. Also, the author has a very descriptive language which sets a good atmosphere and helps the reader/ listener to imagine the scenes.

However, other important characters (the protagonist herself, the childhood friend and now-lover) are not developed and consequently the reader cannot really engage with them or their motifs.

Worst of all, the narrator gallops along in a flat monotone which has next to no highlights. She hardly takes a single breath from one time-jump to the next, which is highly confusing to the listener. This deadens the story and leaves the listener annoyed and frustrated.
