Inhaltsangabe

Stirringly evocative, thought provoking, and often jaw dropping, The Operator ranges across SEAL Team Operator Robert O'Neill's awe-inspiring 400-mission career that included his involvement in attempts to rescue "Lone Survivor" Marcus Luttrell and abducted-by-Somali-pirates Captain Richard Phillips and culminated in those famous three shots that dispatched the world's most wanted terrorist, Osama bin Laden.

In this book O'Neill describes his idyllic childhood in Butte, Montana; his impulsive decision to join the SEALs; the arduous evaluation and training process; and the even tougher gauntlet he had to run to join the SEALs' most elite unit. After officially becoming a SEAL, O'Neill would spend more than a decade in the most intense counterterror effort in US history. For extended periods, not a night passed without him and his small team recording multiple enemy kills - and though he was lucky enough to survive, several of the SEALs he'd trained with and fought beside never made it home.

The Operator describes the nonstop action of O'Neill's deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, evokes the black humor of years-long combat, brings to vivid life the lethal efficiency of the military's Tier One units, and reveals firsthand details of the most celebrated terrorist takedown in history.

"Gripping...this story is impossible to put down.... What O'Neill has written is unique, surprising, a kind of counternarrative." (Doug Stanton, New York Times best-selling author of In Harm's Way and Horse Soldiers)
"O'Neill wrote himself into American history with the three shots he fired into Osama bin Laden...intensely moving and awe-inspiring." (Marcus Luttrell, New York Times best-selling coauthor of Lone Survivor and Service)

Another great Insight in one of THE Top Tier Units!

Well first of all, i've read alot of military memoirs and they are usally good. This one is no exception. Robert O'Neill starts with his way to the Seals and BUD/S, as nearly every Seal Book does, but in comparison to most of the other books he always tells us his personal thoughts in these special situations and speaks about the life as a seal, not only the job. He also looks very critically at some things! Especially at the end ;) Don't want to spoiler!
After all, it's often quite hilarious and storys from a Seal are never bad. Go and listen to it!

PS: Excuse my bad english, i am from Germany :)

Great inspirational read about a man fully dedicated to his profession

The book describes the professional life of a navy seal from his decision to start navy seal training all the way to his retirement. The Storytelling is very detailed, authentic and truly inspirational. Although many reviews criticized the jokes and the missing introspection, I found that this only added to the authenticity of the story. The man was fully dedicated to what he did and there was no room for doubt. As soon as doubt and an egalitarian attitude started to creep in, he needed to get out in order to not risk being killed.

I needed some time to get used to the somewhat colloquial language and pronunciation but it was fine after a couple of chapters.

Truly inspirational book about how full dedication is required to tackle difficult tasks! Immediately after finishing, I am starting the audiobook again.

Thank you

For those who served, with and without combat experience, you will understand. Those without, like me, understand in a more technical therm, those with, well, you know all that, I guess.
For the rest, well it is a huge story of many told by one. It's a story about selflessness and the pride of being a part something bigger then yourself. Enjoy.

And always remember, you can enjoy a wine, a nice car, a good book and your freedom to go, believe, eat, live and love what, where and how ever you choose because of those serving.

So take care about your veterans!

A story worth telling

It was great listening to this book. He tells it well and having worked within these circles I can relate to his humour. Great book and well worth having.
