In The Night Manager, an ex-soldier helps British Intelligence penetrate the secret world of ruthless arms dealers.

At the start of it all, Jonathan Pine is merely the night manager at a luxury hotel. But when a single attempt to pass on information to the British authorities - about an international businessman at the hotel with suspicious dealings - backfires terribly, and people close to Pine begin to die, he commits himself to a battle against powerful forces he cannot begin to imagine.

In a chilling tale of corrupt intelligence agencies, billion-dollar price tags and the truth of the brutal arms trade, John le Carré creates a claustrophobic world in which no one can be trusted.

A beautifully polished, utterly knowing, and palpitating book.
A marvellously observed relentless tale.
One of those writers who will be read a century from now. (Robert Harris)
Complex and intense ... page-turning tension.

Jonathan Pine is the perfect night manager at very luxurious hotels. He is polite, discrete and ultra professional. However, he has an eye for the ladies and they for him. In Cairo, he falls for the beautiful Sophie who confides her suspicions about Roper - unscrupulous arms trader. After she is murdered, he
becomes a spy to avenge her and take him down.

Le Carré takes his time to build the characters and the back story, which makes the book quite long but totally immersive. As usual, it is peppered with gentle humour but sharp observations on the state of the world, and the dubious machinations of western spy outfits. There is always a sense of menace and danger lurking while we wonder whether Pine’s infiltration of Roper’s inner circle will be successful.

Long immersive and tense - great read
