Über diesen Titel

Congratulations, you're a manager! After you pop the champagne, accept the shiny new title, and step into this thrilling next chapter of your career, the truth descends like a fog: You don't really know what you're doing.

That's exactly how Julie Zhuo felt when she became a rookie manager at the age of 25. She stared at a long list of logistics - from hiring to firing, from meeting to messaging, from planning to pitching - and faced a thousand questions and uncertainties. How was she supposed to spin teamwork into value? How could she be a good steward of her reports' careers? What was the secret to leading with confidence in new and unexpected situations?

Now, having managed dozens of teams spanning tens to hundreds of people, Julie knows the most important lesson of all: Great managers are made, not born. If you care enough to be reading this, then you care enough to be a great manager.

The Making of a Manager is a modern field guide packed with everyday examples and transformative insights, including:

  • How to tell a great manager from an average manager
  • When you should look past an awkward interview and hire someone anyway
  • How to build trust with your reports through not being a boss
  • Where to look when you lose faith and lack the answers

Whether you're new to the job, a veteran leader, or looking to be promoted, this is the handbook you need to be the kind of manager you wish you had.

Kritikerstimmen

"I've seen so many people thrust into management in high-growth companies with so little guidance. From now on, I will hand them this book. Its practical wisdom is immediately useful for the newly minted manager - and us old ones." (Ev Williams, CEO of Medium and cofounder of Twitter)

“Julie Zhuo had to learn to be a manager fast, as her role kept expanding in the hyper-growth environment of a successful Silicon Valley start-up. In The Making of a Manager, she shares what she learned - often, the hard way. She combines cutting-edge analysis of how organizations work with engaging and accessible examples of how theory plays out in real life, with stories of what she did right and wrong.” (Gretchen Rubin, New York Times best-selling author of The Happiness Project)

“I wish I'd had this book when I started managing a team at Instagram. Julie covers the full range of becoming a manager, from your first meetings with your team to accomplishing huge goals together.” (Mike Krieger, cofounder of Instagram)

Absolutly amazing insights and thoughts on the art of being a manger. A lot of things addressed my feelings and concerns while struggeling with the new role!

The best book for new managers

I’m giving 5 stars because the book is easy to listen and digest. I was taking notes per section and the book is really well structured, different topics and learnings for new managers. I have personally found difficult to define a path as well as listing the tasks I should do as a manager. This book covers really well what I was expecting to get clarified!
Totally recommended!

Good summary and coverage advices for new managers

Gave me some interesting pointers. But the amount of „greenwashing“ Facebook was too much. I really despise FB, so your mileage may vary.

Everything everybody, especially Zuck, does at FB is purely altruistic and only done for the good of the users. I wasn’t sure if I should pray to this new saint or…

I thought I would be reading a book about the path to become a better manager. I read a hymn on Facebook.

Still, if you can keep yourself from wanting to permanently womit, there are some good nuggets to be found. At least the book is well read.

I recently got promoted and this book is an awesome guide and helpful source for getting started, but also how to grow, scale and deal with the challenge coming across this way.
Thanks Julie for writing this and sharing your knowledge

One of the most useful books I’ve ever read

The audiobook format was also great.
I think every person managing people should read this.

A must-have book for managers

I studied software engineering in Germany, and worked as entrpreneur for about 2 years. I loved the insights to facebooks company culture, and also the narrative style of the ego perspective! There are truly some hints and practices that everybody out there should consider or reconsider :) For the price you should give it a read in any case!

As a freshman, I appreciate the insights!!

Good for starting managers, not necessarily for seasoned ones. What stuck with me the most is the view that the manager’s main job is that of a multiplier of the team’s output.

Good for starting managers

A strong narrator reading out a book which unfortunately features very little managerial advice above and beyond some entry-level business 101. If you happen to be anywhere further down the career road of your first role with personnel responsibility, you will likely end up being underwhelmed by this title.

7 1/2h read worth 10-15min. of advice

I've found almost all content common sense and found very few interesting insights to take away.

Awesome narrator but boring content

it's basically a nice story, but lacks the deep understanding I expected from this title.
it good for using it in the same business the author worked in. for any other business, I'm afraid, it's not usable. Especially it you are talking line production or constructions.
I would have liked to read something about basic concepts.

Narrow view on the topic
