Most startups fail. But many of those failures are preventable. The Lean Startup is a new approach being adopted across the globe, changing the way companies are built and new products are launched.
Eric Ries defines a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business.
The Lean Startup approach fosters companies that are both more capital efficient and that leverage human creativity more effectively. Inspired by lessons from lean manufacturing, it relies on “validated learning”, rapid scientific experimentation, as well as a number of counter-intuitive practices that shorten product-development cycles, measure actual progress without resorting to vanity metrics, and learn what customers really want. It enables a company to shift directions with agility, altering plans inch by inch, minute by minute.
Rather than wasting time creating elaborate business plans, The Lean Startup offers entrepreneurs - in companies of all sizes - a way to test their vision continuously, to adapt and adjust before it’s too late. Ries provides a scientific approach to creating and managing successful startups in a age when companies need to innovate more than ever.

The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. And the next Mark Zuckerberg won't create a social network. If you are copying these guys, you aren't learning from them. It's easier to copy a model than to make something new: doing what we already know how to do takes the world from 1 to n, adding more of something familiar. But every time we create something new, we go from 0 to 1.

They say you shouldn't ask your mom whether your business is a good idea, because she loves you and will lie to you. This is technically true, but it misses the point. You shouldn't ask anyone if your business is a good idea. It's a bad question, and everyone will lie to you at least a little. As a matter of fact, it's not their responsibility to tell you the truth. It's your responsibility to find it, and it's worth doing right.

It's a very good book but I would be even better if it weren't repeating the same principles over and over again.

Food for Thought
The core point of The Lean Startup is both very well presented and extremely important for anyone who makes decisions in the face of uncertainty.
I could nitpick about details here, but this would be beside the point. If I had understood this core idea earlier, I could have saved years of work on ill-fated personal projects, by invalidating the respective false assumption that doomed them much more quickly.
Listening to this makes me wonder how it applies beyond enterprises: how often do we execute pointless plans with apparent efficiency?

Super Ansatz und auch viel praktischer Input aus dem Bereich Management / Personalführung. Wünschen würde ich mir einige Bullet Points als Kapitelzusammenfassung. Neo-liberal trash my tech-bro boss made me read
Full of logical stumbling and ironies, this book assumes that exponential growth is the most important guiding principle for all start ups, with no counter balance for social and environmental responsibility.
It is littered with strange and poorly defined specialised definitions for concepts including its strained version of the scientific method. It also constantly makes weird poorly supported and logically inconsisent statements that it often backtracks upon later with repeated cheap throwaway remarks (like brushing off anticipated valid criticism as simply coming from people who don't understand it, or its claim that businesses who seemed to follow the outlined principles and practices but failed in truth only did so "superficially", like c'mon).
It claims to be innovative and departing from "traditional wisdom", but often just repackages fairly standard business ideas into tired catchphrases with a heavy techbro babble gloss. Most of its evidence is simply glorification of past venture capitalists who were successful purely in terms of the rapid growth and profit of their companies while turning a blind eye to the realties of the entrepreneurial fallacy and complete lack of social responsibility.
The most valuable lesson I learned by reading this book is "fuck me, I got to move to a company with better ethical principles"
