Dawn of Fire Book 5

A depleted Battle Group Praxis returns the slain heir of Kamidar to the Knight world's ruling family – and its embittered ruler, the Iron Queen Orlah.

Listen to it because

Nick Kyme continues the story of the Indomitus Crusade, as a vicious feud breaks out on the Knight world of Kamidar – and the agents of Abaddon are only too happy to stoke the flames.

The story

A war-weary Battle Group Praxis arrives at the Knight world of Kamidar, ruled by the Iron Queen Orlah, to return the queen's slain daughter and heir, who died in Guilliman's name. In truth, the Imperium's mission here is twofold: to strip Kamidar of its resources in order to resupply the flagging armada, and to prepare the Ironhold Protectorate to become part of the defensive Anaxian Line, a crucial bulwark for the Indomitus Crusade.

Yet Kamidar's Knights have survived for many years without the Imperium's aid, and what should have been a simple reunion between allies soon becomes a vicious feud. As division turns loyal souls against one another, the agents of Abaddon move in the shadows, seeking to manipulate this growing rift to their own ends. Can the Imperium restrain itself from laying an old ally asunder, or will the Hand of Abaddon arise triumphant, halting the Avenging Son's reclamation in its path?

Compared to the previous Dawn of Fire Books this one felt a little lacking, but it was by no means bad. There were still a bunch of memorable characters and entertaining events happening while the overall plot proceeded.

Weaker, but not bad

The setting could be interesting, but the airport introduces several characters and plots that later don't fit together will, also the motivations and rationality of the main characters are difficult to understand. The erupting conflict feels needless same two many good characters die almost without any second thought. There is almost no character you can really like and the Chaos warband almost looks like a later addition. Not a terrible book, but just mediocre.

So far the weakest "Dawn of Fire" novel

Solid combination of battles, treacherous acts and surprising stuff. The overall story was not really pushed further but it showed another important aspect of a well planned crusade of such a size.

Good mix

The story has no consistency. Characters pop up and die off. Major events are glanced over and mentioned only as a side note without explanation of how we got here. almost no character development. the storyline is confusing and seems to add nothing to the overall story of the crusade…

Confusing incoherent plot

If you like the second Dawn of Fire books this is perfect for you, also something different from the galaxy ending problems. I hope for another book in this direction.

If you like the political stuff or the spy stuff and knights, this book is perfect for you.

Only downside its a littel short.

Great part two to the second book

Kyme has a unique talent to make characters established by other authors appear extremely flat, while at the same time annoying and incompetent. What's more, his grasp on the lore is tenuous at best. If this book wasn't part of a series from other, talented authors, I wouldn't have bothered. It even seems like his writing gets worse with every book. I wouldn't trust him with a birthday greeting card. He's a literary scourge.
The reading and voice acting was great. No issues there, quite the contrary. Well done.

Why is Kyme allowed to write 40k ... or any ... books? This is cruel.

Unfortunately no comparison to the first three novels, almost exclusively new places and characters, without a corresponding introduction. And the shifting between perspectives and storylines is often so rapid and chaotic that it's already difficult to just keep track of what's happening where and to whom, let alone put the storylines into perspective for the bigger picture.

And I probably only finished the book in the first place because of my light OCD.... xD

Quite disappointing.....
