#1 NYT Bestselling Author

“My favorite kind of whodunit, kept me guessing all the way through, and reminiscent of Agatha Christie at her best — with an extra dose of acid.” — Alex Michaelides, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Silent Patient

From the author of the Reese Witherspoon book club pick The Guest List

Everyone's invited...everyone's a suspect...

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they’ve chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands—the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.

The trip begins innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group’s tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year’s Eve, the cord holding them together snaps, just as a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.

Two days later, on New Year’s Day, one of them is dead. . . and another of them did it.

Keep your friends close, the old adage says. But how close is too close?

If you liked the guest list, you’ll like this one even more. I found the characters more round and interesting and didn’t see the end coming. Also, the finale was way better than in Foleys last story as it wasn’t that one obvious villain who’d turned everyone against him. The right story for a lockdown in winter.

Very gripping. Can recommend

It seems like the author just took up Agatha Christie's idea of a limited circle of suspects once more (as in the Guest List). As much as I liked the Guest List, the idea gets old, and remakes are never like the originals. It may be tempting for an author to take up an idea that worked and just remodel it a little, but the discerning reader cannot be fooled (which is also true for some of Christie's novels). So if the Guest list deserves five stars, this book does not, - at least not for me.

A remake of the Guest List

After loving The Paris Apartment and The Guest List, I had high hopes for this book, but sadly, it didn’t meet my expectations. I struggled through it more than I expected to, especially compared to my previous experiences with the author.

What I enjoyed about her previous works was the structure—usually, the first chapter reveals who dies, and the rest of the story unravels in a series of flashbacks between characters, with time stamps that kept me hooked. The endings always left me shocked and eager to discuss them, but this one was different. There’s no clear revelation of who dies, which felt like an odd shift in her usual storytelling style. It was as if you expected something big to happen, but she left it unsaid.

That being said, I did relate to some aspects of the story, like how strange it can feel to reunite with old friends, fall into old patterns, and realize how much has changed with time. That part of the book captured an important reality.

However, this time, my suspicions about the mystery turned out to be correct, and while the ending wasn’t exactly what I predicted, it wasn’t far off either. For me, that sense of unpredictability, which I loved in her previous books, just wasn’t there.

Overall, I’d give this 2.75 stars—mainly because I know she’s capable of more, and I’ve come to expect so much from her.

A Disappointing Turn
